I wonder how much of this Eric Schmitt fuck-up is attributable to the intern tasked with fact checking the claim couldn't figure out how to make a Google or ChatGPT search for "Jack" "Smith" and a date and come up with less than million results he couldn't be bothered to sort through.

There was a time in the late 1970s when Universal was thinking about making an official Jaws movie that would be a spoof, written by National Lampoon guys and titled Jaws 3, People 0. It seems like a bizarre idea, but then you see the new Resident Evil…

I went by the convention center in Rosemont, and there were signs for something called LOUPE Americas, with the slogan “Explore Hidden Depths” prominently displayed. What is the convention for, you may ask? Ocean exploration? Psychiatric training? Nope. Package labeling technology.

The first thing than strikes me about The Exorcist is how Max von Sydow is in old man makeup. I’m going to call this the full Peter Cushing.

I’ve decided to revisit the The Exorcist series, after watching Bootman and the Devil. I’m ashamed to admit that it’s wasn’t until now that I realized that Garth Marenghi‘s voice and mannerisms were based on William Friedkin. And the arrogance, of course.

Wicker. Because Wicker Man was taken, Wicker Manhood was too on the nose, and Rattan was too niche.

Another one for the list of foreign language movies given English language titles that are other words from the original language (ex. Seppuku being called Harakiri in the US): There’s a new movie by Zeze Takahisa called Ue o Muite Aruko, about the song, and they’re calling it Sukiyaki in English.

I’m watching the Masters of the Universe, and did we really need to hire Jared Leto to do an impression of Victor Buono as King Tut? I feel like there are plenty of actors who could have done that, especially if the character is mostly portrayed by a CGI puppet.

Upon thinking about it a little more and checking some of my old notes from the Stomp Tokyo days, I think I know what happened to the subs on Legend of the Sacred Stone. The subs are not the same bad ones from the old DVD, but they're based on the Japanese audio, not the Mandarin.

Last night I went to see Legend of the Sacred Stone at the Music Box, and it looked great… but the subtitles were just rotten. Misspellings, incoherent translation, weird names. Are these the subs from the Deaf Crocodile BR? Because that would be tragic.

QTP with a movie with a budget of over $100 million that has been completely and utterly forgotten. (This is Asura, a $100 million Chinese movie that was released in theaters for three days in 2018, bombed, and then withdrawn. It hasn’t been seen since, not even on home video.)

Maybe this is a hot take, but I don’t see anything in the Digger trailer that made me want to go see it. Tom Cruise playing a different kind of old than he really is (he’s 64, no really, google it) in what looks like the war room scene from Dr. Stranglove stretched into a whole movie.

Time to watch a weird movie! Trailers for Black Box: Flight 298 made me wonder if it was an air-jungle movie, so here I am. This opening text — um, citation needed? I’m pretty sure if there’s any truth to this, it’s conflating “losing contact” with being outside of direct contact.

It’s kinda funny that if you were to release this image today people would be screaming it was AI. The use of light, the monster being made of disconnected parts, both of her hands look weird (is that two thumbs on her right hand?).

Watching an old TV movie at 360p, and I’m struck how much imagination was needed to watch old analog TV. Costume design had to put important characters in different colors, or else it could be hard to tell people apart.

010

Scott Hamilton @scopi314.bsky.social · 29/06/2026

Since they posted this trailer they seem to have added ": Flight 298" to the title for reasons I am sure are unrelated to what comes up when you google "black box" with safe search off. I am curious to see if this actually an atmospheric jungle movie pretending to be an aliens movie.

One aspect of Disclosure Day that I found interesting (as opposed to the collection of gaping plot holes and absurdities that was the story) was the real life UFO lore, and how Spielberg presented it.

So after seeing Coffeezilla’s video on the Bricks & Minifigs scandal it’s obvious there’s a lot of blame to go around for the situation. The old franchisees seem to have been sloppy when it came to record keeping and engaged in bad retail practices. The corporate officers seem shady.

Reading Majic Eyes Only, a listing of all the UFO crashes that have ever been reported, and I’m really struck how many involve finding three or four alien bodies. Always those numbers, constantly. Are these stories influenced by Apollo crew counts? Low budget sci-fi movies?

Having seen the final trailer for Disclosure Day it’s pretty obvious that it’s all about screen memories and aliens being a stand-in for God, with a side of a Steve Jobs/Elon Musk analog using alien tech from Roswell to run the MJ-12 conspiracy. Even if it’s well done, it’s just disappointing.
