Saw this magical being on a woodland walk today. Just beautiful. Perhaps a pale tussock moth next.

Calendar art & design @janetomlinson.bsky.social. Jane: my late dad worked on the design/transfers/formula for the Johnson Brothers Eternal Beau sugar bowl you’ve featured. 1981 first appeared, re the wedding of Prince Charles & Lady Diana Spencer. It became one of the best-known dinnerware designs.

The first ‘letters to heaven’ memorial postbox appeared in December 2022, based on an idea by 9-year old Matilda Handy, to help with grief. ‘The bereaved are able to write letters, cards and messages to those they have lost and post them.’ . webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ukgwa/202504...

Pre-digital U.K. nostalgia #cameras sarahcarolinephotography.com/blog This month’s find is a stylishly simple 1980s TRUPRINT, in-house design, photo wallet. It has a bit of an 80s video game/film title vibe, with the stereo bold lines and capital text. Spot the old dialling code pre ‘PHONEDAY’.

This month, it’s 90s nostalgia & the 35mm film revival, popular with Gen Z. A time before smartphones, when you could own a camera with no filters and no complex settings, to capture the ‘occasional chaos of real life on 35mm film’ (Dutchthrift). #photography sarahcarolinephotography.com/blog

Helen Dunmore’s book ‘Exposure’ (2016, Windmill) set after WWII and into 1960, has a character with a Minox camera, invented in 1936 by Walter Zapp. It was used after 1945 by both East and West German intelligence agencies as well as British intelligence. sarahcarolinephotography.com/blog

This month, I am hunting Golden Age and later crime fiction novels with a photography link. 1959’s ‘Answer in the Negative’ (2026, Penguin/The Mermaid Collection), with an affectionate foreword by @sophiehannah.bsky.social, features glass negatives, in use during the 1950s in Fleet Street.

In a mind mix of Caroline Crampton’s Shedunnit podcast + blog research, I have been browsing my old detective fiction books. A rabbit hole brought me to the 1892 ‘detective book camera’, designed to look like a stack of books with a handle. sarahcarolinephotography.com/blog #cameras #photography

Photo Answers Magazine’s 1991 slide calculator. ‘IT’S A MINIATURE MARVEL’ they declared. It remains a helpful guide from the film era, on the cusp of the digital crossover. I think I was still using film in 1998/99 but many of us would soon experience our first digital compact #cameras #photography
