Oh this is a cool time lapse. Our Chief Technologist Steve took video this leaving the L/B Robert scientific drill ship (yup, that's it way up above the water!) on the transport vessel the Gaspee. #ScientificOceanDrilling #Expedition501 🌊

Expeditions can be weeks or months long and accommodate crew who are their for a short time to perform their speciality. How does the crew switch out? From the supply ship, which is much smaller than the expedition vessels, so a Billy Pugh basket is loaded with the crew for the transfer. Hang on!

Howdy! We are Transcend Engineering. We develop innovative sensors for scientists. This account is for SCIMPI, a subsea borehole observatory that was just deployed on @ecord.bsky.social Expedition 501. We look forward to skeeting, learning and sharing here on Bluesky. 🌊
A SCIMPI (simple cabled instrument measuring parameters in-situ is about 3 feet long and 6” wide, fabricated in steel or titanium, staged for deployment on the rust colored metal deck of a drilling ship. There is a yellow communications cable with many white and black floats running on either side of the SCIMPI to control the depth of deployment.

Steve caught this #rainbow on the #IODP3NSF #EXP501 a few weeks ago and what a beauty! Resharing for a little Friday awe and inspiration. Transcend staffer Max will be on board completing the SCIMPI deployment in August, the photo bar has been raised! 😉
A full rainbow stretches from end to end of the image. The viewer is on the deck of the scientific drill ship the L/B Robert. The ocean is calm and vast and the sky has pink and gray clouds. Parts of the drill ship are in the foreground.

Congratulations to the crew of IODP3 Expedition 501, for successful deployment of one of our SCIMPI borehole observatory systems in the New England Shelf. This time-lapse shows 13 "picks" to get it all down the drill pipe. Next one goes in first week of August...stay tuned!

Time-Lapse: How a SCIMPI Module is assembled. SCIMPI is a subsea borehole observatory system that does more science for less cost than other methods of monitoring subsea hydrogeology. One has just been deployed on IODP Expedition 501: New England Shelf Hydrogeology. @ecord.bsky.social

This photo is from our first-ever deployment back in 2013. Today, we begin the journey to deploy our next-gen system in support of IODP Expedition 501. More updates soon from the ship. #SCIMPI #OceanTech #BehindTheScenes #MarineEngineering #DeepSeaScience #seafloormonitoring

The L/B Robert is a lift boat operated by Seacor that will be home to the science crew for the duration of Expedition 501. Those legs that lift the entire ship above the water surface to make a stable platform for drilling and other operations are over 100 meters long. #SCIMPI #OceanTech

The heart of the modular pressure housings is the "Active" coupler between tubes that puts all sensors in contact with the environment. It is a very difficult part to machine, but our friends at KAD Designs & Prototypes have The Right Stuff. #SCIMPI #oceanengineering

The Titanium parts that make up SCIMPI’s modular pressure housing are manufactured by KAD Models & Prototypes, just a few miles from our facilities in Vermont. Brian Kippen is a master at CNC programming and teaches the craft to local high school and college students. #SCIMPI #Oceanobserving

These Digiquartz pressure sensors from Paroscientific are sensitive enough to detect ripples on the sea surface from hundreds of meters below. Below the seafloor, they will detect miniscule differences in pressure that drive the flow of through the fresh water aquifer being investigated. #SCIMPI

The first SCIMPI deployment was a collaboration in science, engineering, and international support. Led by Dr. Kate Moran and URI, with help from WHMSI, IODP, and NRCan, the team created a modular, cost-effective system to monitor the seafloor long-term. #OceanInnovation #MarineScience #SCIMPI

SCIMPI was created to make a high-quality, long-term study of sub-seafloor processes simpler and more affordable. Inspired by Dr. Kate Moran’s bold idea, URI, WHMSI, and Transcend, built an elegant, modular system that redefined how ocean science gets done! #SCIMPI #OceanScience #MarineInnovation

SCIMPI is a long-term sub-seafloor monitoring system that lowers the cost of marine hydrogeology research. By adapting to borehole findings and being installable while on station, it reduces ship time, return visits, and ROV use changing how we explore the deep. #SCIMPI #OceanTech #DeepSeaScience
