If you believe this – like we do – then we welcome you to share with us your ideas. We know a thing or two about turning evidence-based, scientifically-backed ideas into tangible public policy. We did it in 1946. We can do it again. Scientists, the world needs you yet again.

This is why we exist. The McMahon Act. The Clean Air Act/s. When our president revealed the CIA was spying on people by opening their mail in the 70s. Now artificial intelligence. We believe scientists have a duty to prevent the fruits of their labor for being used for malice.

FRT algorithms aren't perfect. They won't ever be perfect. And even if they were perfect, the humans developing and implementing the algorithm aren't perfect. We are not ready to deploy this technology en masse without stringent policy and protocol guardrails.

With the introduction of Flock and other surveillance constellations, everyone should know how face recognition technology works. That is, how poorly even the best FRT algorithms perform inside and outside of laboratory settings.

Posting at you live from the millionth extremely hot day in DC: This is a problem that policy and lawmakers have to solve. It is only going to get worse. There are implications for public health, infrastructure, the economy, etc etc. There's no drinking-enough-water out of this. heatagenda.us

In just one week following the publication of our agenda, the headlines have shown it's more vital than we thought. One dangerous heat dome down, another already bubbling up. Headlines will keep looking like this until lawmakers act.

Melting train tracks. Strained power grids (with governors telling people to keep the A/C at 75° or else we're going to have to start planning blackouts). Buckling roads. Increased ER visits. These are not personal problems.
Tweet from Amtrak Northeast: "Travel Update: Due to temperature-related conditions, Trains 72, 74,76, 73, 75, and 77 are canceled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."Tweet from NY Governor Kathy Hochul: New York’s electric grid is under heavy strain as this heat wave drives up energy demand.

We’re asking New Yorkers to voluntarily conserve power by setting your A/C between 75–78°, avoiding unnecessary appliance use, and turning off lights and electronics when they’re not needed.

These small steps can help prevent outages, keep the power on, and protect the most vulnerable members of our communities.

My team is coordinating with Con Edison, NYISO, and New York City leaders to reduce demand across the grid.CNN headline reading: ‘Extremely high’ rates of heat-related ER visits, CDC says, with more coming Saturday

Last weekend was hot. So hot. Climate change means we've got more weekends like that in our future. It'd be better if we didn't have climate change (working on it), but there's actually a surprising amount we can do to make extreme temps more bearable and less deadly right now. ➡️ HeatAgenda.us

It's hot. 3000-all-time-temperature-records-broken-this-year-alone hot. This year might even dethrone 2024 as the hottest on record. Drink all the water you want (really, do!) but extreme heat is not deterred by personal solutions... because it isn't a personal problem. It's a public policy one.

Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around

Recently discharged heart failure patients beat the national 25% odds of readmission to the hospital within 30 days because CMS Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program data spurred their hospital to collaborate with community-based providers for follow-up support at home.
the bad news: all of these datasets are at risk. the good news: resources like essentialdata.us help make the case for how federal datasets benefit American lives and livelihoods.

Girls Scouts vs Backstreet Boys 🕺
Stayin’ Alive

A Girl Scout successfully performed CPR on an adult volunteer who had a heart attack on a hiking trail, applying training from a city-sponsored program launched in response to Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data showing high local rates of cardiovascular disease.
Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)

A city resident with a history of heart attacks avoids putting himself at risk for another one because the Mayor announced on local television stations that people with his condition should stay indoors due to a Code Red Air Quality Index (AQI) alert.

Celine + the Supremes = ❤️❤️❤️
My Heart Will Go On

A patient with high blood pressure that creeps up in the spring controls it with allergy shots rather than upping his blood pressure meds because his doctor read that people with allergies and asthma are at greater risk of heart disease, thanks to National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data.
Ohh, baby love. A pregnant Black woman receives early treatment for dangerously high blood pressure because her local clinic knew from National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) data that this condition is more likely among Black women and provided her with an at-home blood pressure kit.

What exactly does “all lawful use” of AI mean? No one knows. “Lawful” is a legal floor that will look increasingly shaky as AI capabilities advance. It doesn’t answer whether we have adequate civil liberties guardrails or technical safety standards in place. Our statement: fas.org/publication/...
