There is a lot of seriously cool work being done in BC, can't wait to read more about it.

Always fun when, in addition to the stress of the thing you're doing, you also have to keep thinking "Be normal, be normal, be normal" etc.

I remember taking a phone call as a kid from a charity that was fundraising to find a cure for HIV. Years later, a different charity called and they were fundraising to help distribute the treatment. The significance of that difference didn't hit me until years later.

Super interesting, I was wondering when we'd see something better than paxlovid on the market (in a few years if all goes well, I guess!)

This is non trivial. Sometimes I get some emails from students that seem like they could have been written via LLM.

Honestly, saying that the student is in the top 2% of writers out of however many you have taught might be a really good thing to include.

I think this means, contractually, you're obligated to do a ranking of electoral systems. What I'm saying is you'll have to rank ranked ballots.

Hi Kevin, thank you for sharing your challenges in this thread. Could we talk about this more in direct messages? I did my PhD in immunology and I'm trying to sort out the internal tension I feel by the lack of organizational transparency in the evolving understanding of the harms of COVID.

Whenever you can, go to your friend / colleagues thesis defense. It does something good for the soul to see a group of people holding each other to a high standard and be genuinely curious about the world around us.

How do I even put "my doctoral students could not achieve their full scientific potential because they had to worry ICE would abduct them off the street while getting to lab" into a tenure impact statement?

It's almost a sacred moment in a researcher's career where, for the first time, they hand off presenting their work to their mentees. Today my students presented our proposed project to study the microbial ecology of False Creek Vancouver, and won a prize at Langara's Applied Research Day. 1/2

Not wanting to be American is a shockingly unifying Canadian sentiment. I also feel like the solidarity is more Canadian to Canadian rather than to the government? It's been encouraging in some ways.

Spam calls are getting more targeted: I just got a call from Alberta and the person knew my name. They wanted to confirm that I had some sort of "block chain" account. I'm guessing that they're targeting people in my demographic (most likely to own Bitcoin etc ?).

I'm going to awkwardly plug @indianatux.bsky.social and his CO2 / air quality monitors. I bought one early in the pandemic and it helped me figure out where indoors had the best ventilation for me to eat my lunch. Looks like he has a portable pm 2.5 monitor: co2.click/products/mod...
