Elias rolled his eyes and sat back annoyed as the cockpit reconfigured into Auberon's jet mode around him. "Did Jackie's truck die again? Can't Kir fix that by himself?"

"Glazer's commanding officer's name is Commander Nowa Wraithe." An image appeared on the HUD. It showed what appeared to be a human about the same age as Kiran and Elias. He was pale with narrow red eyes and mid length black hair. His expression was unreadable.

Elias scoffed. In all honestly, the guy he was looking at looked like the kind of emo vampire a 14 year old girl would invent in an attempt to be edgy. "So? Why am I giving a shit about this Hot Topic motherfucker?"

Sup #WIPSnips! Elias isn't quite sure what to make of Kiran's "car", but it is pretty cool.

He adjusted the mirrors and reached to adjust the seat, but found it moved him into the perfect position on its own, the wheel adjusting itself to suit him as well. He didn’t recognize the emblem on the wheel and he thought he saw the buttons labeled in an unfamiliar language before he looked again. It had to be some weird high-end import only people in the know could get. It wasn’t the kind of car you saw around the neighborhood and while he'd claimed it was 'cool', it definitely wasn’t the kind of car he’d expected Kiran to drive. The engine had to be insane on this thing. With the growing swarm in the rearview mirrors, it had better be.

Wraithe swallowed hard. The dates lined up. A colony ship, lost and cut off from its homeworld, did the best they could and still ended up so technologically…ancient. It was fascinating. So remote they were unaware of the empire at all, completely unprepared for what was to come for them once his mission was complete. He wondered if his homeworld had once been the same. He almost felt pity.

Sup, #WIPSnips! I've fallen off the wagon for SO MANY REASONS but it's May! And I've chosen to get shit done. Let's roll. Chosen is a good word. All of Auberon's pilots have been chosen. He chooses to let them pilot and that is based on trust more than anything.

Auberon didn't respond immediately. Elias was starting to recognize his moments of stillness and quiet as the mech carefully choosing his words. He could almost imagine a little RESPONSE LOADING…PLEASE WAIT message on the HUD.

Finally, Auberon spoke. "I can't not love my pilots," he said. "I have to love them. I don't get a choice in that, but at least I do get the final say in who's at the controls. Sometimes I've chosen wrong, but that's life, isn't it? We all make choices and have to respond to the consequences as optimally as possible."

Sup #WIPSnips? This is actually one of my favorite lil moments. Standing in a mech's hand or on its shoulder is the coolest. I'm a sucker for it.

Elias froze, staring at the invitation before him. It was an image burned into his mind from all the coolest giant robot shows. A normal human standing proud in the hand of their mech. It was the coolest thing and Elias always wanted to know what that level of power and confidence felt like.
"What's wrong?" he asked, breaking Elias's concentration. "Normally people are excited to do the hand thing."
He opened his mouth to speak but couldn't find the words. He took a tentative step forward. Then another until he was practically scrambling to climb into his hand. "Holy shit," he breathed, gripping onto one of Auberon's fingers while the mech stood, lifting him toward the cockpit. "Oh, this is dope as fuck."
Auberon chuckled. "You're cute. "

Elias nodded and started walking toward the fire pit behind the house. He stopped as he heard the hiss of hydrologics and the movement of gears. He looked to Auberon who appeared to be looking down at him. Its eyes illuminated the dark around its face only slightly. It was simultaneously terrifying as shit and cool as fuck. His phone vibrated. He had a text from Kiran.
Why did you stop? The fire pit is just over there, isn't it?
Why was he asking that? Elias looked to the house, seeing Kiran and Jackie through the kitchen window, laughing about something. It didn't even look like he was holding his phone. Elias's phone buzzed again. Everything all right?
"Oh, it's you," Elias said looking up at Auberon as the mech nodded. "Sorry, I didn't think you were coming."

That made Kiran smile if only just a little. "Coronet and a moon palace, actually, but no. It doesn't matter. I'm kinda worthless. I'm a twin, so it's bad luck on top of an heir and a spare thing. My sister was born first so I'm just…there." Kiran shrugged. "I can't even get being a twin right. I mean, we still look a lot alike, but we're not perfectly identical. And thank goodness for that, she's kind of the worst."

“Oh, uh …sure.” He leaned back and sighed as he felt gentle pressure squeezing his shoulders. He expected it to feel like one of those massage chairs at the mall, but this was better than that. It wasn't some preprogrammed pattern. It felt like it could feel his tension and pinpoint how to soothe it away. He settled into the seat as it warmed ever so slightly and he felt more cradled and supported than he could ever remember. He could get used to this. “Oh my god, dude, have you tried this?”

He heard Kiran chuckle. "Yeah. All the time."

Wraithe frowned. As much as Glazer's agression and combat prowess proved useful, as much as he wanted to carry him forward and push the limits of the Rouge, now wasn't the time. Their objective was clear. “Negative. I don't want to leave an opening to enter melee.”

“Who gives a shit?" Glazer spat. "Stop whining and let's show them what this thing can do!”

“That's an order, Lieutenant!" Wraithe barked. He never liked pulling rank on him, but it was the only way to reign Glazer in. "We need the core intact. I'm not risking it just because you're mad you got your ass kicked.” He winced as something shifted in their sync. It grew hot. Angry. Like something about to boil. Unstable. Volatile. Wraithe wasn't sure he could hold the connection. He needed them to stay together. "Perse, stop fighting the sync. I’ll get you better shots if you’ll just-”

It was almost unsettling how Auberon stared at him. Sure, he was sentient. He moved like a person. He spoke like a person. He was expressive. But when he was still, he didn't move and Elias noticed more inhuman details. He didn't breathe. He didn't blink. And when his optic lenses were locked on Elias, it was damn near intimidating. He was being looked at. Analyzed. "I wouldn't do that," Auberon said at last, his response slow and calm, but unsettlingly firm.

Sup #WIPSnips! Posting while at a monsterfucker book rec panel having a grand ol time. Beam also shows up a lot in a super robot book, surprise surprise. Anyway, Commander Wraithe is kind of a dick. I love him.

Glazer's assessment had been correct - no other mechs on this planet aside from a few experimental amatuer builds. Weapons so behind they were practically ancient. Hell, their attempts at harnessing nuclear weaponry were still horrifically, chaotically uninformed. They had no chance against the empire. If Auberon wasn't here, Wraithe was convinced he could take the planet by himself right now. He considered the thought while he continued to scroll through the data he gathered but shook it off. Obtaining Auberon was the prime goal. Worry about the planet after. He plugged into his machine and took to the sky. This world's military didn't stand a chance against him, much less against Auberon. Kiran was surely aware of that. But maybe they could be just enough of a distraction to leave Wraithe an opening. He hovered above the base, aimed his beam canon and fired. He waited, cloaked above the carnage for his true target to come to him.

They’d also blown up his apartment, so his games were gone too. Typical. The universe seemed to think taking shit from him was hilarious. But it was different this time. He'd never been given a chance to fight back before. This was his moment. The HUD was covered in pop-up windows containing one word. GO! Elias grinned and faced forward, his pulse pounding. He knew what to do. He shoved the control sticks forward. Nothing happened.
