De binnenstad van Leiden zit vol met vochtige middeleeuwse kelders. Daar leven nog kelderkevers (Blaps mucronata), een ondergronds levende soort die tegenwoordig niet meer zo algemeen is. Op de Breestraat vond ik vandaag deze, waarschijnlijk was een lid van het winkelende publiek er op gaan staan...

Most carrion beetles feed on cadavers. But a few, like this rare Ablattaria laevigata, have become specialist snail-hunters. This one I filmed today in Bosnia. It is feeding on a hygromiid land snail. Look at him go!

Last month, we hosted Yeliz Ergöl on an Erasmus+ scholarship. She devoted herself to creating a collection of mollusc specimens from our project in the Komarnica Canyon in Montenegro, to be deposited in the Natural History Museum of Montenegro (Prirodnjački Muzej Crne Gore).

Ik mocht het laudatio uitspreken van de Afstudeerprijs Biologie. Die ging naar Jur Seuren van Radboud Universiteit voor zijn werk aan stormschade in Noorse bossen.

Just returned from a 10-day expedition in Kuala Belalong, Brunei, with @taxonexpeditions.bsky.social. We found many stalk-eyed flies, mostly Diopsidae, but also these Themara true fruit flies (Tephritidae). Not sure which species: both T. ampla and T. hirsuta have been found there before.

Yesterday was the 130th anniversary of the #ICZN, the International Commission for Zoological Nomenclature. It was founded during the zoology congress in Leiden, organized by the then director the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Frederik Jentink.
