Yesterday, I learned that my father died. Alone, on a boat in Georgia. He actually passed on Friday evening. As I was celebrating my bar mitzvah. Surrounded by people who love me.

Haven’t posted about the recent voting results (tl;dr I am on a personal accountability journey and focusing on US politics no longer feels like an effective use of time that way) but a friend of mine is very concerned about Mamdani, etc., and I put my feelings together in a way I’d like to share.

FRIEND: We need common sense, experience and realization that history DOES repeat itself to lead the way
FRIEND: Trust me I am all about values but I accepted long ago that there will always be bad people doing bad things to good people
FRIEND: And there are people that want to destroy America and there’s no better way than doing it from the inside.

ANDY: Maybe! If it were, it would in all likelihood look similar to how things look now. But we can each only control our own selves, so the question becomes what are we going to do about it? How do we feel about it, and what do we do with those feelings?

ANDY: Like I said *i understand* not wanting to live under sharia law and feeling afraid that may be the general direction of things

ANDY: But I don’t want to feel afraid, and I certainly don’t want to feel like it’s an inevitable, insurmountable thing I can’t do anything about.

ANDY: So what *can* I do? I’m not sure exactly tbh. But as a Jewish man the Torah is my starting point. And the Torah gives great direction on which values are good and valuable and important, and just bc of who I am I have to believe in those things. And so that’s where I’m coming from at the end of the day.

And if we were fully honoring our values and people were still being antisemitic pieces of shit then I would be vastly more inclined to say “ok it’s time to throw the fuck down.” But the personal accountability mode of thinking — the mode of thinking demanded by G-d — means I have to start with me and asking am I living the right values and helping others do the same? Bc otherwise my conduct is still blameworthy, and if that’s the case im just making everything harder for myself and further entrenching the conflicts and misunderstandings that are all piling up into everyone fearing and hating each other.

ANDY: Put simply: if we can’t defuse the fear and hate in our own hearts about them, we have no right to expect them to do that for us.
