On the drive back from SQXL and I'm seeing someone allegedly made their own vibe-coded version of Replay Theater AND tried to incorporate it into Dustloop templates so that it would appear above the actual Replay Theater

The Japanese are frequently making this analogy

from Stray Dog: Kerberos Panzer Cop (Mamoru Oshii, 1991)

from A Legend of Turmoil (Seiji Izumi, 1992)

from Full Metal Yakuza (Takashi Miike, 1997)

I think the shot of Corey Yuen (whose director image on letterboxd comes from this film in particular!) lighting his last cigarette on the hot barrel of a machine gun deserves a post of its own

Recently watched Eastern Condors (1987), Sammo Hung's kung fu vietnam war film. The direction of this film was pretty unique especially due to location, and the creativity to make his style of action work with such a premise was very cool too. Definitely one of his top 3 on Letterboxd for a reason.

I also started watching Genocyber last night and with 1 episode I'm pretty sure it is absolutely the goriest and most deranged anime I have seen, but also has the funniest end card I've seen too (pictured below) Families be like "Can we still see Jackie Chan?"

On Thursday I watched Akira for the first time while it was in theaters and it was such a wonderful movie. My favorite part was definitely when Tetsuo jumped all the way to the orbital satellite to destroy it... also those boys were such a vibe honestly

currently watching another yakuza film, Graveyard of Honor (1975, left) and I just found the shot that Kinji Fukasaku self-referenced in Battle Royale (right)... I remember seeing this in BR and figuring it was a little out of place even for the movie it was but now I know what he was doing lmao

from "The Black Panther Warriors" (1993) what feels like a decent 35~40 minutes of this movie is filled with the most ambitious and maniacal undercrank action with cuts and practical effects i don't think i've ever seen anywhere else. this is probably the closest i've gotten to wuxia media honestly

Watched Nemesis (1992). Just a lot of things happen in this movie, like: - Japanese guy speaking with island boy vernacular - Shotgun seems to fire mortar rounds?? - The MC shoots holes through 4 floors in an escape, and in another scene he trickshots a cyborg feddy off a cliff - Cool practicals!

finally got to watching Fist of Fury (1972) tonight. it really felt like what if Ip Man REALLY wanted those guys dead, I was genuinely shocked at how ferocious Bruce Lee moved in this movie. The final fight scene, especially the last 5 mins basically invented Hokuto no Ken too. Wondrous classic
