Attempting to salvage the Slinky of Regret 🙃
An unspooled, unbound coil of silver PLA 3D-printer filament is slung over an empty green bottle in a vain attempt to corral it while I attempt, mostly unsuccessfully, to wind it by hand onto a cardboard spool.

Look at this glorious bastard.
A small boule of gluten-free artisan bread, nestled in brown parchment paper inside a red Dutch oven. It has just been pulled from the oven and the crust is deeply bronzed where the loaf was scored; some flour marks from the proving basket are visible.

I know this is just a regrettably common Type of Guy, but something about this passage in Jenny Odell’s Saving Time still gives me a Matrix-is-glitching feeling in my spine. Same black cat, a century later.
(From page 71 of Saving Time) He was obsessed with measuring and ranking all kinds of things. In the memoir, Galton casually describes his efforts to make a "Beauty-Map" of the British Isles, for which he used a needle to secretly prick holes in a piece of paper listing
"good," "medium," and "bad": "I used this plan for my beauty data, classifying the girls I passed in the streets or elsewhere as attractive, indifferent, or repellent," he writes. Other grading schemes of Galton's were more serious. In his book Hereditary Genius, he describes…(From Wikipedia’s history of Facebook) Mark Zuckerberg built a website called

I would like to state for the record how proud I am that I learned I could do this and then *carried on editing video* for the rest of the week like a responsible adult instead of getting totally derailed by trying to learn the DaVinci Resolve API. ⭐️

This is a library book so unfortunately I can’t rip out this page and throw it out the window into the rainy street to be run over by a bus.
Page from the book User Friendly by Cliff Kuang; highlighted text reads:

As a student at Carnegie Mellon, he helped design a robot programmed with an agenda: as it offered you snacks, it detected what you chose and tried to coax you into healthier choices—
"Cookies again, huh?" It had an LED capable of expressing a subtle frown of judgment. Glaser was still facing the same challenge: How do you build a smart robot that doesn't freak people out?

Reading a library copy of “Against Technoableism” right now, and it’s so good that I’ve already special ordered my own copy from my local bookshop.

oh no this is going to take up space in my brain for days
“It knew that the age of its average customer was forty-six. Two-thirds of its customers were men in well-paid jobs, married with no children. They wanted to be Clive Owen, driving a plush car with Madonna in the back seat. As for the women, many of them probably wouldn't have minded being driven around by him.” (Excerpt from the book Tell Everyone, by Alfred Hermida.)

Channeling my abundance of anxiety into counting stitches.
A work-in-progress semi-circular lace shawl on circular knitting needles, along with the remaining ball of yarn. The hand-painted yarn produces a radial gradient from red at the centre through pink and orange to bright yellow at the current edge of the work; the rest of the yarn still to be knit features speckled blue-grey and hints of purple.

👍 “Yes-and”ing this PSA with an image + alt for the screen reader crowd.
Original post by @nsqe: “Friendly reminder there isn’t an algorithm here so your cutesy-wootsy nicknames and misspellings of Trump and Musk don’t do anything but prevent mute and block functions from working for those of us who are so so so tired.” Each word is punctuated by the grinning face emoji.

#ArtAdventCalendar -concept illustrations for a bridesmaid’s dress I designed and sewed to wear for a dear friend’s wedding
Clockwise from top left: technical line illustration of the front view of a dress with cap sleeves, a sweetheart neckline, full skirt, and pockets; stylized fashion sketch of the same dress in soft pink; a closeup photograph of the pink lace used in the dress, technical illustration featuring an open back detail

This (self-shot, iPhone) photo was a promo shot for a sewing pattern I designed, and I also used the gauntlet/sleeve featured for a tutorial about adding embellishments to stretchy fabrics. #ArtAdventCalendar
Head-and-shoulders photo of the designer in a white lace mask, modeling a beige mesh gauntlet with white trim, embellished with 3D lace flower appliqués. Her hand is held at the side of her face to showcase the details of the gauntlet.Extreme closeup of a flower appliqué being sewn to beige mesh on a sewing machine.

I quilted these placemats with an assortment of fabrics I found locally and while traveling, to echo some of the colours of this poster (photography by Chris Cincotta). #ArtAdventCalendar
Two multicoloured quilted placemats on a black coffee table; the design has rays of bright pinks, yellows, and blues (some solid colour and some patterned) emanating from a dark slope, evoking a sunset or burst of lights. The corner and some of the binding is a fabric printed with multicoloured outlines of hands.A framed poster of Melbourne street art at night.

For today’s #ArtAdventCalendar we’re Doing Science (aka printing the same laser transfer sampler image over and over with different variables and taking detailed notes until I figure out how to get good results from my homemade gel plate 🤓).
Overhead view of a spiral-bound sketchbook surrounded by gel printmaking supplies. The sketchbook is open to a page with a rough black-and-white print featuring several lines of Lorem Ipsum text in different fonts and sizes, a polka-dot pattern, a five-pointed star, and an image of the artist wearing a mask; handwritten notes with details about the printing technique accompany the image.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 2 - back in 2019 I was assigned to make a piece of code-based art inspired by Bridget Riley’s work… I got so obsessed with the dots from Cosmos that it spilled over into this ceramic painting at my nephew’s birthday party!
An un-fired bowl on the table of a paint-your-own-ceramics studio. The bowl is white and its interior is painted with a pattern of green, mauve, and brown dots.

I’ve been experimenting with monoprinting on homemade gelatine plates. This is my first attempt at a print that I had a clear vision for (as opposed to messing around with background techniques) and I didn’t quite nail how I’d imagined it, but it was a good learning experience! #ArtAdventCalendar
Monotype print reading “hello world” in block capital letters, on two lines. The letters are squished together and overlapping, but the paint is slightly translucent so the outlines of each letter are mostly visible. The background of the print is a pale lime green with binary code (zeroes and ones) in a terminal typeface; the word “hello” is printed in neon pink paint, and “world” is printed in black. The paint did not transfer cleanly in some places so the overall vibe is kinda grungy and rough.

No I most certainly did fucking not.
