Scala OSS vs. the LLM Era
LLMs are changing how people contribute to open source - but are they really helping? In this talk, we’ll look at compiler maintenance in the age of AI-generated PRs, issues and comments, and ask what maintainers gain, lose, and how the rules of contribution are changing.

Where Scala meets AI
The AI revolution raises questions about the utility of various technologies, especially programming languages. And when it comes to developer experience, Scala might have just the right answers. We'll take a tour of how to use Scala efficiently for and with AI.

Making the AI agents safe with Scala
Everyone and their dog are building permanent AI agents, but nobody is solving the real problem - how to prevent the agent from doing something it should never, ever do while preserving its general problem-solving capability. In this talk, we will introduce the CapybaraClaw - the agent built with safety in mind that gives you [...]

The state of Scala in 2026
With Scala 3.9 LTS out, three Scala distributions will exist in parallel: Scala Next (3.10+), the current 3.9 LTS and the old 3.3 LTS. WebAssembly is increasingly used beyond browsers for serverless, sandboxing, AI workloads, and more. This talk explores the current state of Scala on Wasm with Scala.js and scala-wasm, an experimental project targeting standalone runtimes, WASI, and the Component Model. This session covers current capabilities, limitations, and future directions.

AI Multiplies — Let Scala Hold the Line
AI is a multiplier, not a fixer — point it at a mess, and it scales the mess up: defects climb, reviews balloon, tests become a farce. Scala's honest compiler and typed libraries are a base that holds as you push harder. We'll assemble the workflow around them with agents, context, deterministic refactors, hermetic builds [...]

12. maxTokens - per-call output cap .maxTokens(n) caps what the model may generate on each LLM call. Sent as max_completion_tokens on OpenAI (works with reasoning models too). Hit the cap? The run ends with FinishReason.TokenLimit and you still get the partial answer.
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
11. Multi-turn conversations Agents now remember. Every AgentResult carries the full ConversationHistory - prompts, tool calls, results, final answer. Pass it back to run and the model sees the whole conversation.
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
10. Streaming the OpenAI Responses API - `createStreamedModelResponse` Same Responses API stream, fs2 flavour: .collect the text deltas, .evalTap(IO.print)
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
9. Union response schemas - `ResponseSchema.derivedUnion[A | B | C]` Intent classification with an exhaustive match. ResponseSchema.derivedUnion[Refund | Complaint | GeneralQuery] - the model returns one variant, the compiler makes sure you handle all of them. Works on OpenAI, Claude & Gemini
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
8. Derive a whole tool set from a service trait - `AgentTools.derive` Stop writing an input case class per tool. sttp-ai: AgentTools.derive[Service](impl) turns every method of a trait into an agent tool. Missing `@description`, overloads, bad param types - all compile errors. Scala 3 only.
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
7. Composing agents - `andThen`, compile-checked handoff Chain agents with andThen - and it only compiles when the first agent's output type matches the second's input type. A mismatched handoff is a compile error.
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
6. Typed agent I/O — `Agent[F, In, Out]` Agents are now Agent[F, In, Out] in sttp-ai. deriveResponseSchema[T] types the output, input[In] types the input, and run gives you Either[AgentFailure, T] - parsed, not a string.
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
5. Usage accounting - every LLM call's tokens, aggregated on the result Every LLM call's provider-reported usage lands on the agent result - per call and aggregated. Cached tokens, reasoning tokens, and why the loop stopped. No more guessing what a run cost
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Agent loops can get expensive fast. sttp-ai ships a BudgetInterceptor: cap tokens or $ cost, and when the budget's gone it ends the loop gracefully - forces a final answer instead of throwing. Plus a LoggingInterceptor with a pluggable sink & tracing with `otel4s`:
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
4. Agent interceptors - composable middleware for the agent loop sttp-ai's interceptors - composable middleware for the agent loop. Wrap iterations, LLM calls and tool executions onion-style (like sttp backend wrappers). Override only the stage you care about.
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
3. `agent-testkit` - test agents offline, with the real agent loop Test your agents without paying for tokens. sttp-ai's agent-testkit: script the model's responses, run the REAL agent loop (your tools actually execute), assert on what the agent did and what the "model" saw. Deterministic, offline
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
2. Per-iteration model selection - cheap model for tool calls, strong model for the final answer Cheap model while the agent calls tools, strong model for the final answer. sttp-ai lets you pick the model per loop iteration with a plain function - capability checks apply to all of them.
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
1. Capability-tagged models - wrong model + feature = compile error Calling .tools(...) on a model that can't call tools? In sttp-ai that's now a compile error. Model constants carry capability tags (Vision, ToolCalling, StructuredOutput, Reasoning) and the agent builder checks them at compile time
100
Scala Space @scalaspace.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
sttp-ai - the #Scala toolkit for working with third-party LLMs - has seen a LOT of evolution lately, especially around the API to code agent behaviour in a flexible, but of course type-safe way. Let's take a code-first tour of the most important features!
