A virtual particle pair on the edge that was never in the black hole doesn’t annihilate, one falls in with negative energy and the other emits. It was never in the black hole. Wouldn’t this just be the universe emitting radiation instead of the black hole?

Hi @seanmcarroll.bsky.social have a question out of curiosity. It’s called Hawking Radiation and people refer to the back hole as emitting radiation but that doesn’t seem to be what happens from what I’ve read.
