Today’s portrait sketching warmup with #drawingisfree_org Thank you to Chloe and all the models! The chunky graphite I used does not erase, so I just went with it. There’s no better way to make an hour go by in a flash!

Our little chrysalis was knocked to the ground by a gust of wind. Then turned black. Yesterday it was empty…and we had our first monarch who had emerged, despite the wind and rain. Two more chrysalises to go! #monarchbutterfly #nativeplants

Finally had a few hours to sift the compost and plant my leggy cherry tomatoes. From our little urban pile I got two wheelbarrows full of luscious fertilizer. Found some fat grubs for the chickadee parents to feed their hungry chicks. Thank you to my dad and my grandpa for teaching me to compost.

Every day I worry that a bird will have eaten our monarch caterpillars. So today I protected them with tomato cages and burlap wrap. Found another tiny caterpillar. And another monarch tried to lay eggs. I need to plant more milkweed!

Hello, little caterpillars! So glad I planted this milkweed early last year. It’s important to get milkweed that’s native to your area. #monarchcaterpillar #narrowleafmilkweed #milkweed
