The attack fell on him so hard that it cut off all thoughts. Searing flesh beneath his scales started to bake, burn, and char. The pain of the dragon spear poison flared as his powers flared, involuntarily trying to ward off the attack. Drake thrashed against the bindings, succeeding in snapping one of the straps over his shoulders. Voices and movement around him gave him an outside sensation to focus on. Somewhere to crawl, mentally, as his flesh continued to burn. It’s not real, Yu! It’s just in your mind!

Do you think I can’t bake you for real, wurm? You’re immortal. I will slice off dragon steaks for my Host every evening, and every morning you will heal. And we will dine on steak for a month. And when we tire of steak, we will explore other delicacies. Pain lanced through Drake’s guts as mental fingers brushed over his liver, his stomach, squelched through the intestines, pulling on them. Drake sobbed in response.

Her whole bag vibrated with Qinglong’s excitement. “They’re still here,” she whispered aloud, making the statement real. Shivering, she adjusted her grip on Drake’s mane and gave up trying to sit up high and help. Instead, she collapsed around the power building at her center, flowing off the Azure Dragon. Protect it, protect it.

I usually go to an artist with fleshed-out ideas and ask them to create the image in my head. The artist I'm using for my next series, @emily-jackson.bsky.social, has been great. I gave her pages of notes to work with for the hummingbirds she's creating. I think strong ideas and notes help.

My Lady Warrior Saga has a whole species of #AwesomeCharacters who are cat people. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the warlord king, Palo, who is a water mage, and scary powerful (but insecure). Most of the cat people are water mages. Palo is a snow leopard.

“And the contents?” Pahaliah pressed in a whisper that Darius could barely hear. Darius schooled her face to stillness. “I know the contents weren’t in the train. My brethren would have returned to the Father with them.”

She didn’t remember falling asleep but she startled awake when someone beside her cleared their throat at her ear. “Easy,” the Priest said. Cal gave a surprised cry, jumping from his seat. His gun appeared in his hand, clicking as he drew on the Priest, who’d taken a step back into the center of the boat. “I know you,” the Priest began. “Do you remember me?” They’d paired suitpants with a bright yellow crop top that managed to emphasize the pale perfection of their abdomen and the flatness of their chest.

“Bubblegum,” Cal breathed and relaxed. He nodded. “Yeah, I remember you. I don’t remember your name though.”

“You were with Pursan, are you still? Where is he?” the Priest asked.

Cal shrugged in answer.

I remember her. Pink spiked hair on a plane. “You were on the plane in Guam.” The Priest turned back to Darius and smiled. “It was you who kept us safe in the South China Sea, right? Hazel?”

“Haziel, but close enough.”

If you change your mind before tomorrow evening, please let one of us at the desks know.” She handed him a pair of wrist straps, the same type they’d been given in California what seemed like a century prior. “These will allow you to access showers, meals, and clothing. You have an alcove set back in the corner. Number eighty.”

There were four. They looked like they were made of felt, or maybe velvet, if paper could be made from velvet, soft and silky beneath her fingers. Darius turned the first one over in her hands, fingers light across the flap. When she pulled on it, the envelope opened with a click as if a magnetic latch gave way. Inside, a white glow sparked to life, growing from a flicker to the soft light of a dim candle. Darius’ surprise faded to curiosity, and she opened the envelope further, peering inside.

At the glow’s center hovered what looked like a fat, tiny hummingbird. Gossamer wings beat rapidly as it looked up at her. Instead of the typical sword-beak one would have expected on a hummingbird, the tiny creature smiled at her from a flat, nearly human face. Its eyes, which were mere suggestions, as if they were closed, traveled up, pushed by the smile. Gasping, Darius snapped the envelope closed and dropped them all back into her bag, letting it fall to the ground.

Standing naked beneath the front arch of the lodge, Drake held out a hand to Darius. “Let’s go see if there’s a bed here.” Darius dug out Drake’s clothes first and waited for him to dress. Then they went through the arch and into the building. Metal and concrete seemed to be all that was left. The wood had moldered back into the jungle. Through the arch, they entered a large open area that may have been a lobby or a visitor’s center sometime in the past.

“Around,” Drake said. His smile faltered. “We’re still looking for him, but I trust his shipwright abilities. He’s fine, I just know it.” Julianna nodded. “This is Don,” Drake pulled the man who was standing beside him into camera. The man waved at Julianna. “He’s a man of science himself. He has your submersible. Here. In Guam.”
