I’m trying something new. I’ve written a novella that is a bureaucratic psychological horror story. It is called, “The Sorter”. I am going to post one chapter each week on Substack for free. Let me know what you all think… joshuasaxontheowl.substack.com/p/the-sorter...

The trap of nostalgia is that you mourn a place that never fully existed and yet believe it did, and you use it as evidence against yourself that “now” is diminished. Sometimes nostalgia is just grief in disguise. Sometimes it’s a signal that you miss slowness, belonging, innocence, or possibility.

I got my first colonoscopy today. It wasn’t the pain in the ass I thought it would be. The prep drink was the worst part. Man, I love propofol. Best sleep ever. Can I have that every night?

I reclaim negation for all writers. It is not for ai, not for bad writers, it is for all! It is not useless, nor is it a sign of AI, it is a sign of a writer nullifying something. Write your favorite negation in the comments. I used a ton of it in my debut novel.

I’m amazed at these Katmai fat bears. These bears chonk up by the day and they’re hundreds of pounds and they’re still snatching salmon out of the air with their bear hands! Meanwhile I dropped a packet of chicken I was pulling out of the freezer today and it smashed into my toes. #mammal

Happy book birthday to my book. The only one I think I’ll ever write. It wasn’t until I started writing that I realized how personal the process was and I think it’s just not for me. But if you’ve ever felt the weight of exhaustion, then this book will not lie to you. books2read.com/u/mdpDKX

It’s not that you’re using em-dashes, it’s not that you’re using negation, it’s not that you’re using anything in a patterned way. It’s that you’re using software built on the theft of others’ copyrighted works. It is not, nor will it ever be a creative process. This matters.

This movie was seriously slept on. It was one of my favorite sci-fi films in quite a long time. I was baffled as to why it did not get a wider amount of recognition.

Writing is deeply personal and I was not expecting to feel like I did. Not bad, not good, exposed. I hope everyone understands the deeply personal nature of the novel. It is steeped in my own desire to end my life. It is more autobiographical novel layered onto science fiction.

I realized that with the publication of my first novel next week, I don’t like writing for the readers. I feel like I’m laying too much of myself out on display for everyone and it makes me nervous. I will continue to write for myself to satisfy the creative need but I’m not going to publish.

The worst part about having a great idea for a story and then writing it is finding out another author had it already and published it and then having to move on. Back to the drawing board.

I hate that “not x. Not y. But z” phrasing has become synonymous with AI. I use it all over my debut novel as both a function of the ascetic stripping of the narrator but also because it is a beautiful way to describe rejection with unmitigated clarity. I despise AI’s corruption of our language.

One of the hardest things to do with my debut novel was to design a repetitive sentence and language structure that would allow me to strip it bare acting as a mirror to the ascetic stripping away the narrator goes through until only the bones of language are left to communicate anything at the end.

The Registry had invested in ergonomic adequacy several years before Jakob’s arrival, following a period in which an occupational health consultant’s report had suggested that the chairs then in use were the source of a disproportionate number of lower-back complaints.

The building had a lobby of grey marble that produced, in winter, a cold that seemed to belong to the building rather than to the season outside. Two guards sat at a desk near the entrance. They nodded when he showed his identification card. He nodded back.

He was aware that something happened on those floors - people moved through the lobby with the focused, unhurried expression of people who believed their work mattered - but he had formed no particular curiosity about what it was.

It’s the exhaustion of being alive to deal with life. It’s ridiculous. It’s pointless. Life is pointless. Why do we put ourselves through this everyday? There’s no need. We should be done with this all. Together. No suffering. No continuation. No impositions. Just blissful non-existence. Exit bag.
