Today I feel like talking about the atheist sentiments in Secrets of Sleipnir. Unsurprisingly, I put those sentiments in because I'm an atheist, it's my sandbox, and I want them there. It's probably hopelessly naive to imagine a people looking down the barrel of losing ALL their technology and decid

I was not very successful in avoiding distractions in August either. Cozy games are my weak spot and my partner is a terrible enabler. Sorry for the late update! It’s been a busier than usual July with TWO trips out of province, the second of which I am on now. I made my usual trip to my hometown, to deliver my children to their relatives for the month and visit some friends, then came home to find the floods and storms in June res

One of my kids' and niblings' favourite nursery rhymes is "Hole At The Bottom Of The Sea," a very simple song where you progressively embellish a scene while trying to maintain the original timing. By the end you're singing, "There's a hair on the wart on the frog on the bump on the log in the hole

Remember to make art with your boner. It doesn't have to be a horny boner, it can be a brain boner or a heart boner. Make art that makes you happy and appeals to your own freakish sensibilities. This is imperative.

#WordWeavers 16/4: If your MC lived in our world, would they have good financial credit? Depends how bad his case of wandering feet was here, and if he still turned it into a career or not. It's very expensive to not have a real home base, so he might well have debt problems.

Sax Brightwell 🇨🇦 @saxbrightwell.neocities.org · 16/04/2026
#WritersCoffeeClub 16/4: Must writing always [be] in complete sentences? When it's not, it should be on purpose and for a reason. The effect thus created should be worth the loss of clarity. For example, some POV narration dips into the sentence fragments used in real speech, creating informality.

#WordWeavers 15/4: Is your antagonist more optimistic or pessimistic? Why? Neither! She has had her expectations ripped out from under her so completely and suddenly that she hasn't yet had a chance to form new hopes, fears, or plans. Life is just happening to her right now.

#WritersCoffeeClub 14/4: Do you consciously work with syllabic stress to create rhythm? Sometimes, a little. It can be part of why a line sounds ugly to me until I tweak it. But not all the time.

Sax Brightwell 🇨🇦 @saxbrightwell.neocities.org · 14/04/2026
#WordWeavers 14/4: Do your MCs tend to run more optimistic or pessimistic about life? Why? Optimistic, because I would get bored writing a little guy who was just a downer about everything all the time.

Sax Brightwell 🇨🇦 @saxbrightwell.neocities.org · 13/04/2026
#WordWeavers 13/4: Does your MC have a particular scent they love or hate due to their past? The smell of baking bread takes Fiyeli right back to his mother's house, a love memory for sure no matter how complicated it became to live there as he got older.

#WritersCoffeeClub April 13: What do you borrow from other fiction (or nonfiction!) genres? I go through phases of reading a lot of danmei and manhua, and some of the clothing and food elements definitely find their way in, especially when I add details to Gibarra City.

#WordWeavers 10/4: Did your MC ever have a melody/tune stuck in their head? Plenty, but none that we know, since it's the 4200s. Often the beats lined up with his feet ground-testing on the Sea of Glass.

#WritersCoffeeClub 10/4: What's something other writers swear by that you just don't get? Full raw-dog drafting with no edits until the first draft is complete. I can't do it. I need the current bit to feel right before I can move on to the next; often that's how I discover what the next bit IS.

#WritersCoffeeClub 9/4: What is your favourite way to introduce a character's appearance? Through another character's eyes, for the first time. It's the most natural way to paint most of a picture. NOT for the first time can work too. POV noticing their OWN appearance is my least favourite.

Sax Brightwell 🇨🇦 @saxbrightwell.neocities.org · 09/04/2026

#WordWeavers 23/3: What are you careful about when writing? Looking up names of returning minor characters, checking my timelines if I can't remember when something happened - and often even when I think I DO remember.

Sax Brightwell 🇨🇦 @saxbrightwell.neocities.org · 23/03/2026
#WritersCoffeeClub 23/3: What's the most you've worked on a WIP before deciding to scrap it? What happened? Just over 30k words. I was posting in chapters, had a comfortable buffer - and then that buffer ran out, and my inspiration ran dry, and I will never post a WIP like that again.

#WordWeavers 22/3: Is there a subject that’s represented poorly in media that you’d like to cover in your work? I'm sick of edgy self-hatred of our own species. I already rejected Original Sin once. When my characters want to argue for a more nuanced view of our place in nature, I let them.

#WritersCoffeeClub 22/3: How do you organise your notes? (No notes?) In a paper notebook, and so in the order I make them. Sometimes that means clipping in notes I made on loose paper while away from the notebook.
010
Sax Brightwell 🇨🇦 @saxbrightwell.neocities.org · 21/03/2026
#WritersCoffeeClub 21/3: Do you celebrate any writerly anniversaries or special occasions? Not particularly. I could see a future where, if I sell enough to pay an artist, I might spring for different covers and release new editions on commemorative dates.

Sax Brightwell 🇨🇦 @saxbrightwell.neocities.org · 21/03/2026
#WordWeavers 21/3: Where does your MC fall, on a scale of timid to recklessly brave? Somewhere in the far quarter on the brave end, for sure. He's forced himself to learn to stop and think more as he gets older, but under pressure the mindset he pops back into is "ready to fight God."

#WordWeavers 15/3: If your SC came across a large crystal that was glowing from within, what, if anything, would they do with it? No touching. If Uncle Fiyeli were around Maunat would go find him and ask Uncle Evret (who would certainly be nearby) if it sounded like dangerous Celestial tech.

#WritersCoffeeClub 15/3: Talk about an experience you had sharing your writing with a group. I'm in a few Discord servers with fandom friends, and I share my books and snippets from WIPs with them. They're very supportive. In one server this has even sparked a trend where others do the same!

#WordWeavers 14/3: Is selling your work for money important to you when you write? If it wasn't important at all I would have published on AO3. I own these characters and this world, so I have the right to sell these stories, so I'm giving it a go. But I didn't quit my day job.

Sax Brightwell 🇨🇦 @saxbrightwell.neocities.org · 14/03/2026
#WritersCoffeeClub 14/3: Do you think readers want new experiences in structure or narrative, or do they prefer what's familiar? I think when it comes to storytelling there is nothing new under the sun. So is a technique actually new? Or is it pretentious, obnoxious, and makes for a bad story?

Sax Brightwell 🇨🇦 @saxbrightwell.neocities.org · 13/03/2026
