As I approach 100 US Filipino Rondalla/String Band I'm reminded of this quote by Ronnie Malley. What we, or mainstreamized views of music, state as popular is always a matter of perspective.

Bottom left is an image of members of Saw Peep sitting on the floor of the theater stage behind the screen surrounded percussion instruments like gongs and metallophones, and shadow puppets laying on the floor. Middle bottom image is Hanuman facing a giant Ogre: this is a view from the audience where the stage and full screen can be seen as well as some members of Saw Peep who are performing behind the screen. Right bottom image is artist director Jon Silpayamanant behind the screen looking at the camera holding the puppet of the naga/serpent. In 2006 I started writing previews of music events that got published at Indianapolismusic . net (RIP) and the first one I submitted was this write-up for the Yakshagana dance-drama "Gadayuddha" [1] 1/11
Screenshot of an archived page at archive.org from the music website indianapolis.net

The image is a closeup headshot of one of the hcaracters from the Indian dance-drama "Gadayuddha" in a very elaborate headdress and jewelry of gold and a thick mustache and decorative make-up.

The text below reads:

"EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW: Yakshagana (The Celestial Opera)
Story by Jon Silpayamanant and Melanie Hughes - Photos by Submitted Photos -
October 1st @ India Community Center

What do you get when you match a hero recognized as the strongest man in heaven, hell and earth against an extremely powerful prince whose body is said to be made out of thunder, along with a dispute over the dignity of a beautiful damsel and a kingdom or two? One exciting martial arts dance-drama, Gadayuddha, that lasts for more than two hours!"
