The Peninsula Public Library board of trustees held a meeting on Monday, September 28. Trustees Miriam Statman, Rochelle Genack, and Sara Isaacson were present, while Joseph Lifschutz and board president Akiva Lubin were absent. Only three hours’ notice was given before the meeting, via signs at the library and an email to library patrons, but it was still attended by more than three dozen community members, including multiple past trustees and present members of government.

On Tuesday, September 22, the State Education Department ruled that the Peninsula Public Library board had acted wrongly in changing their bylaws on March 12. Accordingly, the seats of board president Akiva Lubin and trustees Miriam Statman and Joseph Lifschutz will all be up for election in May 2027. Vincent Squitieri, a resident of School District 15, filed a petition on March 30 against the library board, asking that the Commissioner of Education nullify the new bylaws and direct the trustees who had been appointed to vacant seats to run at the next election.

The Nassau Herald had an article about the Peninsula Public Library board. Pres. Akiva Lubin said, "Our trustees are now fully engaged in the operation and further direction of the library.” We asked former trustee Joe Fuller (PPL trustee: 1989-2019) about this and he responded:

At last week's meeting, the Peninsula Public Library board said "the fundamental purpose of a library is to serve the community it belongs to." We agree. The board seems to have a limited view of who the "community" is, though. This is our response to them.

Newsday wrote that the board already missed a deadline this past Friday. NYSED's position, Newsday reported, was that the board violated state law when they switched the bylaws in March so that Akiva Lubin, Joseph Lifschutz, and Miriam Statman could avoid running for their seats in May. 2/3

I love my library. It has the highest circulation of all the libraries in Nassau County and the staff does great work. Yet the board doesn't seem to care or agree. Local newspapers aren't currently covering what's happening, so I started a blog at savethestacks.wordpress.com (5/6)
