Drew Nemetz completed the English Channel swim Saturday in 14 hours and 16 minutes! Drew left the cliffs of Dover at 2:52 a.m. Saturday and reached France at 5:08 p.m. Drew took on this incredible challenge to raise awareness for clean water and a healthy Long Island Sound.

This weekend’s intense rainfall resulted in flooding across much of CT and coastal NY, with some towns seeing nearly 7 inches of rain in a matter of hours. Our rivers saw discharges of wastewater that can harm ecological and human health alike. www.yahoo.com/news/weather...

Week 6 of our pathogen indicator bacteria monitoring program season provided a good reminder of what we've seen in the western Sound in recent years: when it rains, roughly 3/4 samples have failed to meet state safe-swimming criteria; a little more than 1/2 the dry samples collected have failed.

Normally, our Unified Water Study outings are focused on water quality data. But headed out of Eastchester Bay today, our crew made some air quality observations--like a barely visible Throgs Neck Bridge from a distance where they can usually see traffic moving between the Bronx and Queens.

Every sample collected last week in our pathogen indicator bacteria monitoring program was taken in wet weather conditions: when it’s rained 1/2" or more in the 72 hours prior to collection. Fifty-two of those samples failed to meet state safe swimming criteria. Week 4 results: tinyurl.com/fjnwde8d

Back in 2017, the 1st season of the #UnifiedWaterStudy featured 12 groups collecting #waterquality data from 24 embayments around the region. In this 10th monitoring season, the UWS has 31 groups in 52 bays and harbors. This season, we welcome Avalon Nature Preserve as one of our new UWS partners!

The NYS budget for FY2027 includes an increased investment in the Clean Water Infrastructure Act (now $525m) and continued historic funding for the Environmental Protection Fund ($425m). Now, we need to make sure communities know how to access state funding to address their clean water challenges.

On Tuesday, a resolution sponsored by Assemblywoman Rebecca Kassay passed the Assembly, designating Friday, May 22 as Long Island Sound Day in New York. The resolution is expected to be introduced in the NYS Senate next week by sponsors Senator Anthony Palumbo and Senator Monica Martinez.
