Manta rays play a vital role in the functioning of ocean habitats. Reef manta rays, in particular, are key drivers of nutrient cycling across coral reefs and beyond. Follow the reef manta on its nutrient-cycling journey! Illustrations by Kelsey Manners-Dickson | © Save Our Seas Foundation

The principle of countershading is simple: darker on top, lighter beneath. For the whitetip reef shark, this means a darker dorsal side that melts into the depths when viewed from above, and a pale belly that dissolves into sunlit surface waters when viewed from below. 📷: Jake Wilton

How does the largest fish in our ocean prey on the smallest organisms in our ocean, zooplankton? By filter feeding. Gaping their mouths, they filter plankton from the water with their gill rakers. They are able to filter an impressive 600,000 litres of water per hour. 📷: Simon Hilbourne

The powerful jaws of the giant moray eel hide a mouth lined with rows of inward-pointing teeth. That’s not all; this fish has pharyngeal jaws - they’re secondary jaws found in the throat. While feeding, they propel these jaws into the mouth to grip and pull prey backwards.
