My dad would pretty much never believe me when I said I felt safe walking around or taking the subway in NYC. Even at night, and in the Bronx. There’s a point where one should realize trusting a fear-propagating news network over your kids own lived experience ain’t great, but oh well.

Watching this John Oliver, I’m reminded of the time I dined with Jimmy and Roslyn Carter, and the two extremely down-home-dressed secret service agents declined our offer of food. No food tester for the former pres, but those guys didn’t want camp stove jambalaya on plasticware for some reason.

Sorry, was being sarcastic to entertain myself. I drive a delivery truck in NYC and think personal cars should be banned in lower manhattan. I think every block in the outer boroughs should have a designated, enforced delivery area. I think buses and bikes should take priority almost everywhere.

Okay, so kids can just walk around when I’m trying to park my truck? This makes them LESS SAFE. I usually get home from work around the time they’re trying to do their hang out, and it’s absolutely wild that their parents would let them roam the streets. It’s not safe. At all. I don’t get it

Test flight years back over Europe crashed because the pilots were lackadaisical and the post-paint job wash crew basically fire-hosed the static ports. Airspeed readings were okay until two of the three were inaccurate and literally frozen. Thankfully no passengers on board but all test crew died.

To be clear, “I never saw a B-52 leave with a bad fuel gauge” and “modern commercial airliners leave with bad fuel gauges all the time” are actually congruent. It speaks to the reliability and durability of modern aircraft systems.

Long story short, I hope the fuelers in Detroit can correctly determine the amount of fuel as necessary, and I hope the pilots of that flight understand their responsibilities to verify.

For second, to check the quantity manually, drag a huge stand to the flightline. Get on top of the wing, and the fuselage, and don’t wear safety gear. Take a long-ass metal poll, put it into the tank. Pull it out, like a dipstick on your pickup but it’s midnight. Hope that your reading is good.

Second aside, the original Boeing aircraft I worked on, the B-52, manufactured in 1961, had *dip* sticks. First of all, B-52s have 12 fuel tanks. I never saw a B-52 fly with an inop fuel gauge.

Two quick asides: Airbus figured to have magnetic floats in the tank to serve as the level of fuel, in order to not make a mess on the ground. Smart. It’s been a while, maybe Boeing has followed on newer aircraft.

Convert that with a temperature/density figure, that’s your weight in the tank. 6.7 lbs per gallon as a standard for jet fuel if it’s not the Arizona desert or the Alberta winter.

When the top of the hollow rod started to fill with fuel, it drips down and comes out the bottom. The measurement of distance between the bottom of the wing and corresponding point where fuel flowed, that’s the quantity, in gallons.

So, to fly, if a gauge is inop, the fueler or maintenance person must manually check the level of that tank. This is done with a “drip stick.” Things may have changed, hopefully so, but on older Boeing jets, a person unscrewed a rod under the wing. Slowly.

Different aircraft have different fuel monitoring systems, and different ways of gauging fuel quantity. Generally, a plane can fly with one or even two gauges inop. But if everything else is working normally, the cockpit crew does need to be able to verify the quantity in each tank before departure.

A little knowledge bomb, like a knowledge grenade. Passenger aircraft fuel systems are a bit complex. Most have 3 tanks, 1 in each wing and 1 in the center. Each tank generally has 2 pumps, center feeds the wings, those feed engines, all can crossfeed for weight and balance and redundancy.
