According to Nebula Theory, the Solar System formed about four and a half billion years ago from a massive accretion disk of gas and dust that orbited our Sun. Alas, there are still questions about how they formed, with scientists favoring one of two possible pathways. Either they emerged from collisions between larger rocks (planetesimals), or from the gradual accumulation of pebbles by planetesimals.

New research from the University of Copenhagen has offered new evidence that could settle the debate. Using a novel approach, they have reconstructed the earliest stages of the planets’ formation by analyzing their chemical composition. Their results suggest that a hybrid model that merges the two pathways could explain how rocky planets like Earth and Mars formed, which could have implications in the study of exoplanets.

The research was led by Assistant Professor Haiyang S. Wang and Professor Anders Johansen, researchers from the Center for Star and Planet Formation, part of the Globe Institute at the University of Copenhagen. They were joined by researchers from the Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics at ETH Zürich, the Nevada Center for Astrophysics (NCfA), the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, and multiple universities. A paper detailing their findings was published in the scientific journal Nature Astronomy.

Bowel cancer “melted away” after immunotherapy, then stayed away. A short course of immunotherapy before surgery may offer remarkably durable protection for some patients with stage two or three bowel cancer. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/202... . #science | #health | #cancer | #BowelCancer

Summary:
A short course of immunotherapy before surgery may offer remarkably durable protection for some patients with stage two or three bowel cancer. In the NEOPRISM-CRC trial, 32 patients with a specific genetic form of bowel cancer received pembrolizumab for up to nine weeks before surgery instead of the usual post-surgery chemotherapy. After nearly three years of follow-up, none of the patients had experienced a cancer recurrence, including those who still had small traces of disease after treatment.

The Controversial Class That M.I.T. Is Paying a Professor Not to Teach. Michel DeGraff, a vocal pro-Palestinian activist, can’t be easily fired because he has tenure. But he has been kicked out of his department. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/09/u... . #MIT | #Palestine | #Israel | #MichelDeGraff

The name of the proposed Massachusetts Institute of Technology course was as provocative as it was long:

“Language and Linguistics for Decolonization and Liberation and for Peace and Community Building — From the River to the Sea in Palestine and Israel to the Mountaintops of Haiti and Beyond.”

The instructor was Michel DeGraff, a longtime tenured linguistics professor at M.I.T. who came up with the idea in the months after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel. He was a leading faculty voice siding with pro-Palestinian campus protesters, whose frequent rallying cry for Palestinian freedom, “from the river to the sea,” was seen by some Jews as antisemitic.

An M.I.T. panel rejected the course over questions about whether Dr. DeGraff, a Haitian scholar and expert in the study of Creole languages, had the expertise to teach it. That was supposed to finish the matter.

To Dr. DeGraff, it was more like the starting gun.

He disagreed that he lacked the ability to teach the course and protested the decision in a flurry of emails decrying it as part of a “new McCarthyism.” He complained to his colleagues, including deans and the university’s president in long email chains — which he then made public.

A black-&-white photo of Johnny Ramone playing his guitar, born Oct. 8th 1948.

John William Cummings (October 8, 1948 – September 15, 2004), better known by his stage name Johnny Ramone, was an American musician who was the guitarist and a founding member of the Ramones, a band that helped pioneer the punk movement. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Until the band's disbandment in 1996, Johnny, along with the lead vocalist Joey Ramone, were the only two original members who stayed since its inception, and appeared on every one of the band’s albums.

In 2009, Ramone appeared on Time's list of "The 10 Greatest Electric-Guitar Players". He ranked No. 8 on Spin's 2012 list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and No. 28 on Rolling Stone's similarly titled 2015 list. Alongside his music career, Ramone appeared in nearly a dozen films, in documentaries, and on television. Ramone's autobiography, Commando, was released posthumously in 2012.

Fox News at 30: Even the pretense of impartiality is all but gone. www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox... . #FoxNews | #FauxNews | #MSM | #media | #MediaMatters .

Fox News’ role as a Republican propaganda machine is clear to anyone who has bothered to peruse its programming — President Donald Trump knows it, Fox co-founder Rupert Murdoch knows it, disgraced network co-founder Roger Ailes knew it, and longtime viewers like me certainly know it. The last holdouts arguing otherwise at this late date are some combination of ignorant, naive, on the Fox payroll, lying to the public, or lying to themselves.

To wit, Fox chief political analyst Brit Hume, touting the 30th anniversary of the network’s launch on Wednesday’s Fox & Friends, offered up a hoary chestnut in praising his employer.

“We program it in such a way that for the times of the day when people are looking for hard news, they can get it,” Hume argued. “And if they’re sitting back in the evening after they watch the news, consume whatever news they like, and we do these opinion shows at night. There’s news in them for sure, but it is a mix and I think it works well and the balance is real.”
