I've written (again) on my Substack about the latest installment of what I've termed The Worst Public Policy Decision of the 21st Century Thus Far - aka "the WA GST deal". It will be of no interest to non-Australians, but I think it is important to Aussies. sauleslake.substack.com/p/the-sad-sa...

The sad saga of The Worst Australian Public Policy Decision of the 21st Century So Far continues
Australia's richest state, Western Australia, will get $6.6 bn more from the Federal Government in 2026-27 than it needs, according to the latest assessment by the Commonwealth Grants Commission.

The unfortunate reality is that neither party has any kind of mandate to do what needs to be done to put the state’s finances on more sustainable footing.

Some people - including, apparently, some serious Wall St types - believe that there is actually "method in the madness" behind the way the Trump regime is announcing and implementing its tariff policies. This piece from The Atlantic is a good antidote to that. www.theatlantic.com/economy/arch...

The ABC's Jacob Greber is absolutely right - Australia needs to think very carefully about the growing risks stemming from its increasing reliance on an erratic and untrustworthy United States as a strategic ally and source of defence equipment. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03...

The last thing Australia needs is the Turkish treatment in Trump's new world
Australia is betting all its security chips on an ally turning inwards, not least because America's own ability to fund a global security umbrella is limited.

Trump has often expressed admiration for one of his predecessors, the 25th President of the US, William McKinley. That's largely because of McKinley's reputation as a 'tariff man'. In 1890, as a Congressman from Ohio, he sponsored legislation raising US tariffs from 38% (on average) to 49.5% ....
