Anyway, I'd love to hear the Okinawan music talk if it's online?😁

There's also, in my view unfortunately, a contemporary movement in Ireland thereby to present him as a "Waterford man" and to marginalize him as a Dublin writer despite his being, globally, probably the second or third best-known Dublin writer of all time.

His "official" biography and collected letters deemphasize his Irish connections, as does one contemporary American "scholar" of Hearn who I suspect doesn't read most of the relevant languages, but he apparently exchanged letters with Yeats and privately expressed a fondness for Ireland.

As for Hearn, I'd love if more people in Ireland knew him. He's a fascinatingly "modern" figure who grew up in Dublin in the 1850s. (Another dream of mine is to see the plaque on his boyhood home on Gardiner Street restored.)

Thank you for the follow back!☺️ I've been on a Gaeilge kick for the last few weeks, and it's a dream of mine to translate Japanese literature into Irish. I've only been to Okinawa once myself, but I enjoy the music, food, and the Uchinaaguchi language😄

"Hearn didn't speak Japanese" is a myth believed by those whoーlike Davissonーthemselves don't speak Japanese. Hearn's most widely read book contains a self-effacing remark that actually just meant he didn't read Kanbun or Kobun but that has been widely misunderstood by his non-japonophone readership.

ーTo a general western audience Mind if I ask how old you are? When you say a "general audience", you seem to be referring only to people who grew up with a particular subset of Tolkien adaptations and ripoffs rather than the writings of Tollers himself.

Not sure what the timing or offhandedness of your remark has to do with anythingーdo you not (or no longer?) sincerely believe that "yokais" are distinct from "goblins"? If so, you are quite different from everyone else I've seen make such comments over the last five or six years.

Yokai *are* goblins. The latter is the conventional term in English for what later came to be known in Japanese by the former. I would be very surprised if you could cite a reliable source that says the former was not coined at the end of the 19th century as a calque of the latter.

On a more serious note, if English Wikipedia is to be believed, it seems his name is spelled "Lee", presumably to match the most common English spelling of Bruce Lee's name.

"Gērugo" is used in older linguistics and history textbooks, and is therefore slightly more likely to be familiar to most native Japanese speakers with no connection to Ireland. In the last six months, I have seen it used by two people on Japanese Twitter apparently meaning to get a rise out of me.

"Airurandogo" is used by the Irish embassy in Tokyo, virtually all Irish expatriates in Japan, secondary school and university Japanese teachers in Ireland, and most native Japanese speakers who have lived in Ireland for more than a few months.

Eoin Ó gCluain Tarbh(アイルランドのイアン) @satorukun0530.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
Japanese has two names for this language, "Airurandogo" and "Gērugo". These names are translations of "Irish" and "Gaelic" respectively, the former, even more explicitly than its English equivalent, emphasizes the language's position as the official language of a country named "Airurando".
161
Eoin Ó gCluain Tarbh(アイルランドのイアン) @satorukun0530.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
Lastly, "Gaelic" is used almost exclusively by non-Irish, with the sole exception being loyalists from the northeast of Ireland, who appear to use it primarily in a derisive/"othering" fashion. Within the republic of Ireland, the noun "Gaelic" refers exclusively to a sportsball game, not a language.
140
Eoin Ó gCluain Tarbh(アイルランドのイアン) @satorukun0530.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
"Irish" is used universally in contemporary Ireland, and by most non-Irish who are familiar with and/or friendly to contemporary Irish culture and society. It appears to have displaced "Gaelic" in or after 1922, but has been in use (perhaps first in Scotland) for at least around 400 years.
140
Eoin Ó gCluain Tarbh(アイルランドのイアン) @satorukun0530.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
"Gaeilge" is used almost exclusively in contemporary Ireland, primarily by those with an affinity for the language itself, which is only spoken natively by a tiny minority of Irish people, but is "practiced" by a somewhat larger minority.

Eoin Ó gCluain Tarbh(アイルランドのイアン) @satorukun0530.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
My home country's first official language has three names in English. In order of the "age" of their coming into use as English words, from youngest to oldest, those names are "Gaeilge", "Irish", and "Gaelic".

I do recommend reading the "middle part" of Genji (around chapters 20 through 40) carefully. Lots of anglophones completely neglect stuff like a 40-year-old marrying a teenager and a middle-aged guy trying to seduce the daughter of his friend and his late ex who is half his age😬

Eoin Ó gCluain Tarbh(アイルランドのイアン) @satorukun0530.bsky.social · 09/05/2026
If you're talking about what I think you're talking about (the Wakamurasaki chapter), then I'd argue that modern anglophone readers only notice it because (unlike, e.g., the Tamakazura and Wakana affairs) it *was* unacceptable in its original context and is explicitly called out by other characters.

It seems to have been an innovation of some on Japan's far right (see, e.g., the literal meaning of the Zaitokukai's name), and to have been adopted by some of the Franca types who like to write about "Zainichi issues" but seemingly don't ask their Korean friends what they think.

Eoin Ó gCluain Tarbh(アイルランドのイアン) @satorukun0530.bsky.social · 09/05/2026
Just putting this out there: Referring to Japanese citizens who are ethnically Korean as "Zainichi Koreans", and especially using "Zainichi" as a noun referring specifically to ethnic Koreans, is not something white anglophones who consider themselves progressives should be doing.

I love the soundtrack for this game, and this piece is a real banger, but this one part doesn't make much sense to me. Why does the theme for the calamity from the sky suddenly get "heroic" for about 15 seconds?

Hearn was famously short and swarthy. There's a photo of him and Setsuko both standing, and they're about the same height. There's also a reason he's facing to the left in all those photos.

And it came to pass that in its 1904 war with Japan, the "Soviet Union" suffered a crippling defeat. The world must indeed have looked on with great astonishment😆
Shigeru Mizuki
TONO MONOGATARI
Translated by Zacairiá Mac Dhaithí
Drawn & QuarterlyThe shogun (military dictatorship) was overthrown, a new government and military was quickly founded, and, against all odds, Japan not only resisted becoming a colony of the United States, but in a mere sixty years showed themselves to be a great power by defeating the Soviet Union in the 1904 Russo-Japanese War. The world was astounded.
