Our next session takes a deeper look into captive animal behaviour - we explored differences in individuality between wild and lab gerbils, and how cat vocalisations can be used as an indicator of pain and stress. Great talks by @saskiasp.bsky.social and Laura Lucille Kühne! #gradbehav26

Our first session focuses on communication across various animal taxa: adaptation of vocal signatures in lemurs, comprehension of alarm calls in monkeys, and social behaviour and vocalisations in bats. A strong start to the meeting by Saskia Müller, Christian Luff, and Wiebke Berns. #GradBehav26

Dogs may watch TV differently depending on their personality, suggests a study in Scientific Reports. Excitable dogs follow on-screen movement, while anxious ones react more to sounds like doorbells or car horns: www.nature.com/articles/s41... #AnimalBehaviour #VetMedSky @natureportfolio.nature.com

Humans are obsessed with cognitive skills that make us ‘superior’ to other animals, and we construct rankings of ‘intelligence’ where humans conveniently always take the gold position. But does a species at the bottom of our intelligence ranking genuinely lack cognitive skills? #WorldWildlifeDay

The ‘World’s Dumbest Bird’ can innovate to find food
For the first time, Palaeognath birds (the ancestral bird grouping containing large, flightless birds like ostriches and emus) are shown to be capable of technical innovation, inventing new behaviour to access concealed food.
