Understanding acoustic indices as multi-taxa biodiversity and habitat quality indicators
Acoustic monitoring captures the sound of nature, revealing biodiversity patterns and underlying drivers. Acoustic indices are increasingly used to an…

Furthermore, acoustic indices also reflected underlying indirect and direct drivers affecting biodiversity, for example, the vegetation density and the tree basal area. Hence, it’s not only the birds!

Using recordings from north-eastern Madagascar, we show that acoustic indices need to be understood as multi-taxa indicators. Including multiple taxa strengthened association between indices and species richness.

Inspired by a round table discussion on the usefulness of acoustic indices at the 5th World Ecoacoustic Congress in Madrid, Spain, earlier this year, we developed a conceptual framework on what acoustic indices actually reflect.

Are acoustic indices useful? Acoustic indices are increasingly used to analyse bioacoustics data, but many studies correlate indices only with single species richness (e.g., birds) and flag inconsistent performance.
