For instance, air should definitely be a flying creature. I went with a bird to be closer in scale to the other creatures I chose, but which bird? In the end, I settled on an owl (in part) because air more than the other elements reflects the day/night cycle.

It would be equally valid to depict them all as humanoid or all as more magical/mythic. In any case, it was fun trying to think of a single representative for each element.

I thought it was strange on the symbolic level that salamanders are usually depicted as the animal of that name, but the creatures for the other elements are usually depicted as humanoid. As the elements come together to make a greater whole, they should be on equal footing.

The creatures are encoded from earlier myths by the alchemist Paracelsus in 1566. He uses a few names, but roughly Gnomes for earth Undines for water Sylphs for air And salamanders for fire.

The Gates are an interesting subject to me. Despite the idiom having a literary history stretching back into antiquity, they (to my knowledge) aren’t depicted in visual art that often. Even when they are, the artist often chooses to make a clear visual distinction between the Horn and the Ivory.
