NPR has lost one of its finest journalists.

For 15 years, Rose Friedman was an editor and reporter who helped shape NPR's arts and cultural coverage. She was one of the co-creators of the popular Books We Love reading guide and, most recently, helped lead NPR's America 250 series.

Friedman died at home, of cancer, in New York City on Sept. 17 at the age of 38.

Rose Friedman was an editor to the end. She said she wanted the second line of her obituary to acknowledge her role as a shop steward for SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents NPR's editorial workers. She wanted the line to say that her "proudest achievement" was helping convince NPR to increase its paid parental leave.

Official statement from the Supernova Alliance, the nonprofit organization Tim founded. From their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/permalink.ph...
To our Supernova International Ska family, we are shattered to share that Tim Receveur, the co-founder of the festival and the Supernova Alliance, has passed away.
There are no words big enough for this loss. Tim was deeply loved by so many people around the world. His presence, his heart, and the way he brought people together touched more lives than we could ever begin to count.
Right now, we are devastated and still trying to process the unimaginable. We do not yet know what comes next or what the coming days will look like, but we will share more information when we are able.
We know you will all want to help in any way you can and information about that is forthcoming. For now, we ask for privacy, grace, and space for the family and the Alliance Board to grieve.

45.2% wasn't a particularly bad showing that year, but it was about 3% lower than other county-level Dems due to Democratic machine operatives actively campaigning for the incumbent Republican. Eye-opening experience in New Hampshire “good old boy” politics. electiondatabase.nhpr.org/contest/154708

Richard Manzo with a recollection about that time we tried to break through the New Hampshire Democratic machine to replace a couple of crappy Republicans. It was unavailing. #nhpolitics
Story time for New Hampshire Democrats who are sad about the results of yesterday’s primary:
When Nicholas J. Sarwark and I ran as Libertarians for County Attorney and County Treasurer back in 2022, we noticed a little flaw in the Democrats’ organizing that year. They hadn’t filed candidates for either office. The big issue there is, the guy the Republicans ran for County Attorney wasn’t very good at his job the last time he had it, and the guy the Republicans ran for County Treasurer was known even to other Republicans as an absentee.
There was another big issue: both the Republican candidates were running a quiet write-in campaign to steal the Democratic nomination and walk to a victory despite their records.
So Nick and I hatched a little scheme: run a louder write-in campaign, take the Democratic ballot line, modify our campaigns to be fair to the Democrats who nominated us, and we can all come together in the interest of good governance.
Oh how wrong I was. Nick and I were then smeared as extremists by the Democratic establishment who then directed the rank-and-file to vote for the Republicans! Yes; Nick and I had Republicans in our corner too, plus the small Libertarian contingent, and the Democrats just sabotaged all of that to ensure that nobody outside their little club could get elected.
This is despite the fact that Nick and I were two of (if not THE two most) New Hampshire’s most moderate Libertarians. I think Nick would have openly identified as a progressive!
So, yes, I’m sorry to the very motivated people who supported Karishma Manzur. She ran a great campaign, and would have represented real change. That’s why they fought her so hard. This is what New Hampshire Democrats do.

What a difference a few months makes for Taylor Farms, featured in the May 2026 Costco Connection for their premixed salads. Life comes at you fast…
“Great Greens” article from the May 2026 Costco Connection

Costco supplier Taylor Farms helps take the work out of salad prep by MICHAEL REDSTONE

Building the perfect salad at home is not the easiest proposition. Between shopping, washing, slicing and mixing, putting a finished salad on your plate is an involved process. Salinas, California-based Taylor Farms has solved this dilemma by creating several lines of ready-to-eat greens and salad kits.
Taylor Farms was established in 1995 by Bruce Taylor, a third-generation fresh produce entrepreneur. Taylor wanted to help improve people's lives by providing easier access to healthy foods.
His vision proved popular and today, with Taylor still serving as CEO, Taylor Farms is the largest producer of fresh packaged salads, vegetables and fruits in North America.
The company's original mission remains unchanged after 30 years of expansion. "Our sole focus is on quality; freshness, convenience and customer satisfaction," says Taylor Farms retail division president and Costco member Mark Campion.
Taylor Farms, which also owns Earthbound Farm, grows produce across North America to ensure that its products are processed as close to its customers as possible. For example, the company's new Baltimore facility, scheduled to open in August 2026, will serve its expanding markets in he Northeast.
Taylor Farms remains a pioneer the premixed salad industry. "Our packaging technology allows us to combine various vegetables, such as romaine and cabbage, that historically could not be bagged together, into a harmonious mix of flavors and textures," says Campion. "The variety of greens and vegetables, together with dressing and other salad toppers in one bag, not only creates a delicious salad mix but also provides a significant convenience to our customers." Product developers at Taylor Farms work closely with Costco buyers to create new recipes. "Costco is a wonderful [customer] to help us innovate with new products," Campion says. The…

Pleased to report that Judge Espinosa granted Sean Vadney’s petition for relief under CRS 1-1-113 and that he will appear on the official Colorado statewide general election ballot as the Libertarian candidate for Secretary of State.
ORDER GRANTING PETITION
This matter is before the Court on Petitioner’s Verified Petition to Place Sean Vadney on
the General Election Ballot for Secretary of State to Fill the Vacancy Caused by the Withdrawal of
Alex Astley (C.R.S. § 1-1-113) filed September 1, 2026. Respondent filed an Unopposed Motion
for Forthwith Hearing on September 2, 2026. A hearing was held on September 3, 2026 where
Petitioner was represented by Nicholas Sarwark, Esq. and Respondent was represented by Peter
Baumann, Esq.
This case concerns whether Petitioner can be placed on the general election ballot after
candidate Alex Astley withdrew sixty-nine days prior to the general election and where
Respondent’s office denied Petitioner’s form to be on the ballot as untimely pursuant to C.R.S. §
1-4-1007. The question this Court has to determine is not one of fact, which are largely undisputed,
but one of law. Specifically, whether C.R.S. § 1-4-1007 should be construed under the substantial
compliance provisions in C.R.S. § 1-1-103(3). The Court finds and concludes in the affirmative.

The illustration is by André Mathiot and featured in the first issue of An-Nasr (Triumph), an illustrated bilingual magazine published for North African Muslim troops during the war. An-Nasr was the successor to an earlier, similar magazine - Ya'allah! - which had ceased publication in June 1940, following the German victory in France. The magazine ran until the end of the war and for several years after.

On the day of Gajdusek’s release, friends, including the neurologist Oliver Sacks and the physicist Freeman Dyson, met him at the jail, along with four of the children he had brought up. “Whatever he may or may not have been doing, it was clearly not bad for the kids,” Dyson said in an interview for a 2014 book titled “Great Minds.” Dyson said that he had three heroes: Richard Feynman, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Gajdusek. “When he came out of jail, the first thing he said was ‘They broke Oscar Wilde, but they did not break me,’ ” Dyson said. “So he is definitely a hero.”

The evening of his release, Gajdusek took a flight to Paris, where a French research center, the Institut de Neurobiologie Alfred Fessard, had arranged for him to have his own office. The institute also published the journal he had kept the year of his arrest. It was titled “Ascent to the Zenith Was Magnificent: Denouement Was a Bit Difficult.”

Written by Arthur Schlesinger Jr. in 1973: “Corruption appears to visit the White House in fifty-year cycles....Around the year 2023 the American people will be well advised to go on the alert and start nailing down everything in sight.” Impeach, remove, investigate, prosecute. #IRIP
“If the Nixon White House escapes the legal consequences of its illegal behavior, why will future Presidents and their associates not suppose themselves entitled to do what the Nixon White House has done? Only condign punishment will restore the popular faith in the presidency ans deter future Presidents from illegal conduct - so long, at least, as Watergate remains a vivid memory. Corruption appears to visit the White House in fifty-year cycles. That suggests that exposure and retribution inoculate the presidency against its latent criminal impulse for about half a century. Around the year 2023 the American people will be well advised to go on the alert and start nailing down everything in sight.” -written by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. 1973

Digging in to “Migration and the Origins of American Citizenship” by Professor Anna O. Law with my morning coffee. Excellent and informative so far.
m landing Da prid
and religious minorities were dis-incentivized from landing. Despite the labo shortages, not all were welcome. Still others like enslaved Africans were forcib imported and made to work against their will for life. The English also regarded Indigenous people who already resided there as a group not to be included in the polity but to be displaced by physical removal or by the purchase of their land. This early form of settler colonialism sought not to subjugate, but to elim-inate" Natives from their land in order to replace them with settlers creatinga new society.
Contrary to the insistence of present-day government agencies like the Department of Homeland Security and some scholars that there was no immigration regulation before the federal government assumed control in the late nineteenth century, borders were never truly open—not even in the colonial era. People did not haphazardly present themselves at the English North American mainland colonies to be indiscriminately admitted; some were recruited, others discouraged, still others entered the borders while imported under duress. one can debate the administrative capacity of colonial officials to enforce their migration laws, but that is a different discussion from whether prohibitions existed at all.

OK, so there was once this fellow named Abe, and he was a president of the United States, which is a country made up of a union of states you might have heard of, and he is largely credited with saving that union, because when extremist aggressors arose to destroy it in order to preserve their own supremacy, he fought them to prevent that destruction. The fight is known as The Civil War, though I prefer to call it The Failed War to Preserve Slavery. It just seems a more specific and honest name.

I don’t think the fight was good, by the way. I’m not pro-fight. But the fight had become necessary, and so I’m glad that Abe did the necessary thing, even as I wish that he hadn’t had to do it.
