There are a surprising number of episodes of children’s TV shows about the perils of creating a problem don’t you can solve it.

Bad: There’s a GIANT FUCKING SPIDER in my compost bin. Good: It’s probably eating a lot of bugs out there. Bad: Bugs, for the most part, are actually good for compost. 🤔

I haven’t decided whether to evict the spider from my compost bin or leaving it alone to feast on the smorgasbord of bugs in the compost. It seems very happy in there. I, however, am not so happy. I’m a bit afraid to open my compost bin now😅 And it is not a native species.

Of course, the internet said the same thing about the centipede that climbed up my shoe, climbed up my sock and bit my leg as soon as it reached skin, so I remain wary👀

Sarkat @sarkat.bsky.social · 19h
The internet tells my that they are mildly venomous, but not dangerous to humans. Their bite can cause bee sting level pain and swelling, but isn’t serious. Supposedly, they are shy and docile and only bite if provoked.

Another picture, from slightly further back to better show the size of the spider. (Photo behind a warning for still being a giant spider.)
A photo of a stocky, dappled brown spider with a leg span of at LEAST 2 inches on the inside wall of a black, plastic compost bin. This picture is taken from slightly further back to better show the size of the spider. Which is large.

According to Seek, my scary new tenant is a Mediterranean Spiny False Wolf Spider. (Photo behind a Graphic Material tag. Warning for THE BIGGEST DAMN SPIDER I have ever seen that wasn’t a tarantula)

CW: Spider Yesterday, I was crouched down, using a hoe to turn my compost when I looked down at the edge of the bin and there, about 2 feet from my face, was THE BIGGEST DAMN SPIDER I have ever seen that wasn’t a tarantula. I yelped, recoiled and went inside for my phone to try to identify it.

I don’t think the death of a child would stop ICE. But, if we all work REALLY HARD on flipping the House and Senate and then badgering them into decisive action, maybe we can stop ICE before they start gunning down children in the streets.
000
Sarkat @sarkat.bsky.social · 22h
But, we’ve had pretty low levels of ICE activity here, so far, due to the intervention of a couple of tech CEOs (I guess they are occasionally good for something! Some of them, anyway.) If we get an ICE invasion here, that risk benefit equation might change.

Sarkat @sarkat.bsky.social · 22h
I was going to say this, too. The Rapid Response Network in Santa Clara County discourages the use of whistles, because they work really hard at verifying ICE sightings so that people’s lives aren’t constantly being disrupted by false alarms.

-Call your fancy language models “Artificial intelligence” to capitalize on the cachet -Run your businesses with such wild disregard for… everything that within 4 years, people hate your cool new toy with a blazing passion -Try to change the name to “Super Intelligence” to avoid the stigma of AI

It’s so weird that we keep seeing these claims from the exact people who are preventing us from having any of these things NOW. Are they completely clueless about how the economy works, or do they just think that WE are?

As a poster, I hate writing alt text. If I could express what I want in words, I wouldn’t be posting an image! But as a reader, I find it very helpful. So I let BlueSky force me to do it and only occasionally give up and just don’t post the image because describing it is too hard😅

My uncle used to do tech support for specialized hospital equipment and my mom says that the thing that made his so good at the job was that he had the ability to ask a panicked caller to check if the machine was plugged in without it sounding condescending.

The especially been excited about the explosion of graphic novels, which are great for slow readers because they can tell an interesting, complex story in bite sized blocks of text.

Funny… I have been marveling at the wealth of good middle grade, transitional reader material available to my struggling reader, compared to what was available when I was his age and stuck because everything as my reading level was boring🤔

I’m in my 40s and I love being read to, too. My husband has been reading Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Shards of Earth to me, when we can find time in between work and parenting and general adulting.

To be fair, none of the people Elon Musk bribed to vote ever actually got anything either and Trump owes us all like, $10,000 in promised kickbacks. I don’t think actually PAYING anyone is part of the Republican model of “paid protesters”😛

The news coverage of this is so funny. The headlines are all “Candidate models in XXX-rated BDSM ads!” And then he’s just, like, standing there wearing a leather harness a one jeans. Those are PG13 at best!

What do you mean, it would be free? We would be paying for it in sales tax. That’s what this measure is about. Which doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t do it. There are solid advantages to better public transit and I am actually in favor of it, but we would have to pay for it.

Looks like OpenAI is being sued by Legal Advocates for Safe Science and Technology over the Hugging Face hack. Hopefully either they will sue for this, too or the Wikipedia Foundation will do it themselves. Article: www.wired.com/story/openai...

What happened in 1995?👀
A Google Ngram Viewer graph of appearances of the words “necromancy” and “necromancer”. Both words show high, spiky lines through the early 1800s then fall steadily from about 1835 on (with an odd little spike in “necromancy” in 1855) to flatten out at a low but consistent usage from around 1943 to 1995. Then both lines shoot straight up from 1995 to the end of the data in 2022. In 2097, “necromancer” overtakes “necromancy” for the first time and ending notably higher.

That would be my first guess. I could also see there being fun in just seeing what the AI come up with and how good its picks are, or whatever. But I don’t play fantasy football, or use AIs, so what do I know?😅

Though, companies don’t let everyone who owns stock in the company pile into the office and yell at the CEO about product features, either. If they did, nothing would ever get done!

I feel like there is a way in which this is true of how the creator-work-fan ecosystem works... But that doesn’t excuse bad behavior on the part of fans. Actually, it’s what makes it so detrimental. Fans harassing creators poisons the feedback loop that keeps the whole system running.

And it’s then that was supposed to be the more ethical AI company!🤦🏻‍♀️ But apparently by “ethical” they meant “We will try to teach our language model ethics” and not “We will train it on ethically sourced data”.
040
Sarkat @sarkat.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Adobe is doing it with Firefly, sort of. They are only training on images they have lisence rights to, but some people are still unhappy with that, because the images weren’t licensed specifically FOR that. I don’t know of anyone doing it with language models.

Maybe there aren’t enough people who care about copyright who aren’t just categorically against generative AI for there to be a market? Still, I would think that “Using our model definitely won’t land you in a copyright violation suit” would be a draw for to business users.

I’m surprised that I’m still not seeing many companies leaning into DOING THAT and aggressively marketing the fact, as a way to stand out from the AI crowd.

Maybe Patricia C. Wrede’s The Dark Lord’s Daughter? It’s a portal fantasy that subverts and plays with a lot of fantasy tropes by putting them up against a pragmatic and pro-social main character who flatly refuses to be the Dark Lady the world expects her to be. And it’s available as an audiobook.
