As Babyloss Awareness Week draws to a close this year with the annual Wave of Light, I want to send lots of love to everyone who has been affected by pregnancy and babyloss. It can be the loneliest place on the planet but you are never alone.

Whether you choose to mark Babyloss Awareness Week alone, or if it is too much this year, there is always help out there from the fantastic brilliant charities like Miscarriage UK & NI, Sands & Tommys. Whatever role I have, I’ll always support others to break the stigma of pregnancy loss & babyloss

The morning and afternoon in Holborn & St Pancras. 🌹 It was great to speak with so many people choosing hope with Labour today. An added bonus to knock on doors alongside the fantastic Jamie and fellow geriatric millenial @joshfg.bsky.social, apparently his t-shirt is a famous service station 🤷🏻‍♀️

Great parks make a world of difference to our green spaces, a place to have fun for all ages. It was great to drop in on Leagrave Park ahead of its opening and see it take shape. I've fought to get more money into parks, and this is the difference a Labour government makes 🛝🌹

This morning I went to the Macmillan Coffee Morning at the Black Swan Pub today, organised by the lovely Dee, Susie and Patrice. It was a fantastic morning with a brilliant turnout! Lots of tea, coffee, homemade cakes and sausage rolls 😋☕️🍰

Getting the steps in the Holborn & St Pancras by-election. I really hope Sagal gets to be the next MP for a part of London she’s grown up in and serves as a Cllr. 🌹

This change in law matters to Luton North. It matters for the 1 in 4/5 pregnancies that end in loss. From April next year, women and their partners who experience a pregnancy loss before 24 weeks will be entitled to two weeks of bereavement leave.

As rail companies come back into public control, the Labour govt is getting rid of nonsensical rules that prevented passengers from using other train companies during disruption. This will make it easier for everyone to get around without having to pay for another ticket. Starting this weekend! 🚄

🇵🇸 The situation in Palestine is a moral emergency. Today, the government announced a ban on trade with illegal settlements, a new sanctions regime against settlers, and a "double lock" arms sales ban on arms being used in the West Bank and Gaza.

🎂 Happy 60th Anniversary to Luton Sixth Form College! The college has been part of the lives of so many Lutonians over the last 60 years. Post-16 education and skills are a key part of my agenda for Luton North, and it’s always a pleasure to partner with Altaf and everybody at the sixth form.

🎆 Andy Burnham - there "is a case for going further" on fireworks regulation 🎆 The PM is right - we need a better approach to anti-social behaviour, especially fireworks. Great to hear him say that there is a case for better fireworks laws.

Disabilities don't abide by working hours - and neither should disabled people's ability to get around town 🚍 That's why this Labour government is making bus travel free for people with disabilities, 24/7.

Ashcroft Play Park is open! 🛝 Thanks to hard work from local residents, we've secured a much-needed facelift to Ashcroft Park in Stopsley. A child said it was “the best play park” she’s been to. I think the double zip lines, the accessible trampoline and monkey bars were absolute hits!

I’ve heard from residents across Luton North who’ve been affected by cowboy builders. This govt is introducing: ✅ A new Trading Standards approved code to help you identify and hire traders with confidence. ✅ A trusted place your money can be held, until key milestones are completed.

We had a really productive time in Derry/Londonderry. 3 years ago I got married in the beautiful Guildhall behind me and Chris there. So it was wonderful to be back in a more formal capacity and to meet with fab groups from the North West about the challenges ahead.

As back to school preparations start, this is a Small Business Saturday staple for families. JS School & Sportswear on Neville Road stock every school uniform across Luton. From book bags to blazers, they have it all. It was lovely to see some eco friendly wear by supporting tree planting schemes.

Do you live near Spinney Road/Henge Way? The £20 million in Pride in Place funding for Marsh Farm covers your streets and parts of Sundon Park. This is led by you, backed by the Labour government. I’ve been out listening to people’s ideas on how we can use the £s we’ve secured to improve the area.

What do we think of the Luton Lib Dems and independents doing some grubby deal to back Reform in our town hall? Luton always chooses love over hate. Only Labour in Luton is here to stop Reform. 🌹

This was a small business Saturday I made earlier (Friday) as it’s a lovely coffee shop but it’s only open Mon - Fri. Jo’s Coffee Shop & Sandwich Bar in Sundon Park is a hive of activity throughout the week and it does WEDGES of cookie pie!!! If you have a sweet tooth this is an absolute must.

Are you as fed up as I am by the constant fireworks at night in Luton North at the moment? Then make sure to fill in the fireworks consultation that the government is running - which is looking to change the law so we finally get stronger restrictions on fireworks sales.

Great news! Well done Bev Craig and the team. Labour's support was well over double that of Reform in the first round of votes and was only just shy of winning on first preference alone. Bev is formidable and will be an excellent Labour Mayor of Greater Manchester 🌹

Following the new Prime Minister’s appointments, I am joining the Northern Ireland Office as a Minister. This means that I will be leaving the position of Chair of the Women and Equalities Select Committee. I have loved every minute of it and am proud of what we have achieved together. 👇
Statement:

Following the new Prime Minister’s appointments, I am joining the Northern Ireland Office as a Minister. This means that I will be leaving the position of Chair of the Women and Equalities Select Committee. I have loved every minute of it and am proud of what we have achieved together.

We made changes happen. I was so proud to finally see bereavement leave extended for women and their partners who experience miscarriage, after a long campaign and far too much suffering from all of us who know this pain.

I wanted to tackle difficult topics well, find common ground, and scrutinise effectively to ensure equalities law works for everybody. In nearly two years leading the Committee, that is what we have achieved together. This doesn’t mean everyone agreeing but disagreeing well and compromising - putting aside ego to see progress - because progress isn’t inevitable.

Our work helped bring about important changes in non-disclosure agreements, FGM and the abuse of non-consensual intimate images

We launched landmark reports covering medical misogyny, the music and comedy industries, gendered Islamophobia, Black homelessness, the d/Deaf community, the rights of older people, community cohesion and many more. During evidence sessions with equalities ministers and the EHRC, we held them to account. We highlighted concerns raised to us from across the country on equality law, to ensure legislation is effective and works as intended.

Thank you to all committee members, Phil and the team of hard working, knowledgeable Clerks who are at the heart of the work we do, and the many witnesses who gave evidence to our inquiries.

I look forward to seeing what this brilliant committee does next and I know the new chair will love this amazing work and team.

🎇 BIG news - the government will look to ban the loudest fireworks from sale! This comes after I have campaigned for years alongside so many amazing people. I will be following the consultation closely and continuing to make the case for change.

I just nominated Andy Burnham to be leader. Andy will bring deeply held Labour values to Number 10, bringing new powers for people in places like Luton North that have been held back by Westminster for too long. And my mum loves him too.

My thoughts go out to the loved ones of Shaun Burton, who tragically lost his life in Friday evening’s crash. I also want to thank our emergency services, including at the L&D. Time must be given for the investigation & support should be available for all those involved in this horrific incident.

People are galvanized by the politics and change that Andy Burnham offers, which is why turnout was so high in Makerfield. That can only be a good thing for politics, for our Party and our country.

Andy Burnham’s striking result in Makerfield shows us that politics can’t carry on as usual. People want a different sort of representation, and they deserve it too. We now need a managed process to change our national leadership. Makerfield is just the start of how we reconnect with Labour values.

This bad take keeps getting worse. Reform have a problem with women. Even Reform women have a problem with women. Domestic abuse is not on the players of the match, it’s on the perpetrator.

Reform talk a big game on protecting women - but the behaviour of their MPs and candidates show the opposite. Voters in Makerfield deserve better. The country deserves better. We deserve hope, not fear. #PMQs

Bereaved families like Amani’s are desperately trying to raise funds for brain cancer research so that more people don’t have to go through what they have. A brain tumour diagnosis should not be a life sentence. We have £40m of funding committed to brain cancer treatment - we must use it. 💜

Yesterday's session exposed the weaknesses of the EHRC's Code of Practice. Rather than bring "clarity", it will lead to more confusion for businesses, staff and customers, as this example highlighted. This is one of the many reasons, I have signed the fatal motion.
