I think what will happen is as you suggest, a few people will retain their jobs, the rest will be out of work. That will create a knock-on effect to other industries and more people will lose jobs. The winners will be the ones at the top as always and the ones who can stay out of the system.

Once the paperwork and bank account were sorted, I could get back to something more familiar to me which is building the website. It’s Laravel and Filament (my number 1 choice), with a healthy amount of AI involved in the translations (which still need some attention!).

Seeing sick and dying cats and kittens made it impossible for me to leave things as they were. With help from other locals, I set up a non-profit association so we can sterilise them and look after them. The cats will stay in the village, we don't want to remove them.

I live in a tiny rural village where there are roughly three street cats for every person. Sadly, only a handful are fed regularly, and the majority aren’t sterilised or getting veterinary care.

The association took months to set up. It cost money, time and a fair bit of stress. Portuguese bureaucracy is quite something and navigating it as a non-citizen made it almost impossible. But, I carried on because the cause is important to me.

My work life and home life couldn't be more different with AI. I work with it all day and it's all AI in my Twitter and Bluesky feed. But, for the majority of people where I live they don't use it all. I have a friend (also an immigrant) who uses the free ChatGPT and that's about it.

I'm surprised there isn't already, it's a lot of work for what I need to do. I have lots of websites and now I'm thinking that once I've done these two I probably won't do the rest. They are only side projects so there's no point in wasting half a day with each one (I'm slow).

A wildfire ripped through our farm last year, destroying many of our olive trees. The aftermath was like some sort of hellscape. For days after the air was awful and the ground still burning hot. It's easy to forget but you're right, clean air and water are not to be taken for granted.

I asked Claude about why the info I need isn't in a handbook, his answer was: Partly it is, but not in one place, and not aimed at you. He then finishes with: The chapter on "you've set it up, now what" doesn't exist. You are, annoyingly, well placed to write it. Yay! Just what I needed!

I've finally given up waiting for Amazon to deliver my router so I've had to buy whatever they have locally (not a lot). Still, it works, and it's better than using my phone's hotspot. Not impressed with Amazon or PAACK though.

There's such a disconnect between the world outside my house and the work I do. It's like living two different lives. I know a lot of people like to use tech to help manage their farm and I have thought about setting some things up but I quite like the way it is all done traditionally.

The morning is the best time of day. The air is cool and fresh so I can get out and water all my plants & herbs and do some chores or errands. The cats also enjoy running around and playing before it gets too hot. Then I go back inside to work and they go to sleep.

We have a flock of sheep, not for meat or milk. They’re mostly our lawnmowers. But we still need to shear them every year before summer. We use the wool around young trees. It helps keep moisture in the soil during the hot months and eventually breaks down naturally. Low tech. Still works. 🐑🌳

Been quiet on here this year — busy with work, the farmhouse renovation, and the animals... which have quietly turned into a proper project of their own. The dev space is moving so fast it's hard to keep up, especially working essentially part-time. #Laravel #PHP

Some more good news over the weekend, our last remaining missing farm cat came home in one piece. Almost 3 weeks since the fire, we'd given up hope but Charlie is back home! On the downside for the past 2 days the air is full of smoke from the massive fires to the west and north of us.

Last night was interesting. A storm came, amazing lightning all around. Then it rained & the wind was horrific. Finally, unsurprisingly, that set off a raft of fires all around us. Luckily not too close and they were out by morning but with the wind & no aerial support it could have been worse.
