Varney the Vampire was a penny dreadful that ran from 1845 to 1847. The character Sir Francis Varney introduced many key tropes of vampire lore, such as fangs, puncture wounds in victims' necks, hypnotic powers, and superhuman strength. He also inspired the Marvel character Varnae. #WyrdWednesday

In the Russian tale "Sivko-Burko," two eldest sons don't want to hold vigil at their father's grave as he requested, so they send the youngest, dubbed Ivan the Fool. Not really. Usually tales with disability involve miraculous cures. I listened to a podcast version of this myth and was disappointed that the boy suddenly wasn't deaf anymore. It became a "my disability was cured and now I can do things" story instead of a "disability pride / f**k ableism" story.
