1/4 - Check our new paper in @ijwildlandfire.bsky.social We use MOEA optimisation to support decisions for #wildfire risk reduction (e.g., where should we use prescribed burning to reduce risk?). Optimisation improves fuel treatment plan effectiveness by 80–280% and adapts to changing objectives.

New paper out! This is a big, interdisciplinary reflection on the types of challenges that are likely to come our way in the context of wildfires in the next 50 years. Was fun to write this one. authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S... www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Interdisciplinary challenges for wildfire futures
Wildfire has shaped many ecosystems across Earth, and humans have in turn shaped fire and its interactions within a range of socio-ecological systems.…

Have you ever been confused by the way the same fire term (e.g fire severity) is used to represent a whole range of metrics🔥? Particularly if you are new to the field? In this piece we emphasise the need to careful explain and link fire metrics to relevant ecological mechanisms. Hope it's useful!

Final chapter of my PhD has just been published (only a few years late 😃). Check out the paper here: doi.org/10.1111/ecog... For a quicker read, check out this article which includes a super cute retro video game example 🌳🔥. pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/vVi...

The Marsden Fund was set up to support pure research. Diverting half of it to fund applied research undermines New Zealand’s potential to generate ideas that underpin commercial success.

Funding research for economic return sounds good – but that’s not how science really works

Albanese “has personally intervened to scupper a deal” with the Greens over an environmental reform promised last election… circumventing his own environment minister, Tanya Plibersek, who had been negotiating “for months and was close to striking a deal”. Yikes. www.theage.com.au/politics/fed...

Pretty nice to be back in the bush for a couple of weeks 🌿 This work is looking at forest regeneration post Black Summer with a range of previous disturbances (fire 🔥 or harvesting 🪵) in low elevation mixed forests around East Gippsland.
