True, 3l per day seems extreme. Of course, you can only use baby wipes for cleaning if you've stockpiled them 😉

In my experience, 3 days of food & water worth is not OTT

Also, bad weather happens and storms can take out power/water. Not sure why you wouldn't want to make sure you had suitable food and bottled water at home.

On the second day of storms that have left tens of thousands in the UK without power, people are arguing about whether it is sensible to prepare for a period without power/water etc. I think it's fair to say that Brits do not do emergency preparedness

The gov advice is clear that you should check expiry dates every 6 months, no-one needs to be getting sick
110 1
Sarah H Praia @sarahhpraia.eurosky.social · 21h
No, which is why the advice is to stockpile food that doesn't require cooking

Sometimes it's just a scale issue. Portugal had a storm in Jan that took out 6000km of power lines, hundreds of pylons, 50 substations, 1 million without power. Damage on that scale isn't fixed easily or quickly

Sarah H Praia @sarahhpraia.eurosky.social · 22h
When a huge storm took out power/water for days in my area, shops weren't open for at least 24 hours, then only accepted cash for another couple of days. By day 4, you could buy water again with a bank card. Until then, you relied on what you had at home

And this is (some of) what the government is doing with regards to planning

These are the threats that the UK advice covers beready.campaign.gov.uk/be-informed-...

Are you emergency ready ?
Be informed about the potential risks out there and what to do if you find yourself involved in an emergency.

Having a few days supplies helps in every situation. At best, it means you get through a power/water cut without needing help; at worst, it allows authorities to prioritise more important things and organise the logistics of getting supplies to the gen population

There is a list here. No specifics about food because that depends on your diet preferences, but general advice. Having been in a situation without power & water for many days, the comment about wine was relatable for me, whatever counts as a pick-me-up is good to have when things are miserable

Absolutely. The climate events that make having some emergency stores useful are going to become more and more common.

I think the statement is also used as an excuse by people who can afford it/have the space. Someone who said they have no space commented they can't store it under the bed because that's where they store their fabric & yarn. That's a choice

But the advice is part of the government's resilience plan

A lot of people seem to think the government should be delivering bottled water to them within hours of an emergency, while also complaining that the same government is incompetent. Good luck with that

Sarah H Praia @sarahhpraia.eurosky.social · 25/10/2026
I understood from your first reply that you were saying there is no need for personal resilience, you called it performative nonsense. The advice is one part of what looks to be a much broader plan

OK, well again, two choices. Be prepared for at least a couple of days, or complain. One of those things is more useful in an emergency than the other.

Also, as a parish councillor, you could be thinking about facilities for offering showers, how to get charging stations set up etc, as my parish council did on day 2.
120 2
Sarah H Praia @sarahhpraia.eurosky.social · 25/10/2026
or complain that the government hasn't prioritised you and you have no water. Up to you.
120 2
Sarah H Praia @sarahhpraia.eurosky.social · 25/10/2026
A couple of days without any water? Rather you than me. You have two choices in an emergency. Take some personal responsibility and accept that gov resources might be focused on bigger issues like hospitals, armed forces bases, emergency services centres - all badly damaged in the storm -
110 1
Sarah H Praia @sarahhpraia.eurosky.social · 25/10/2026
You can call it performative nonsense, but many governments around the world have been advising this for years, it's not unique to the UK
120 2
Sarah H Praia @sarahhpraia.eurosky.social · 25/10/2026
It's great that they were able to get water to 58,000 people. More than 1 million were affected in the storm I'm talking about and receiving water 'in a day or two' doesn't help you for the first couple of days if you don't have any stored
100 1
Sarah H Praia @sarahhpraia.eurosky.social · 25/10/2026
We had a storm in my area last winter that caused devastation across a wide area. I had no water for 4 days, no power for 10, no comms for ages. Shops couldn't operate for the first couple of days. No gov is getting water to you in time in situations like that

But also equality, healthcare, water & air quality, availability of different foods. All with caveats, but improved in general

Communications. When my aunt emigrated to Australia in the 70s, she spoke to family twice a year as calls were so expensive. I live abroad and can have free video calls with family every day if I want

The key is to have food that doesn't need refrigeration, that can be eaten without cooking, or cooked with minimal water. Plan for eating with no power and only bottled water

That's what I can't understand about Burnham's 'emergency' Twiglets. No way they would be lasting in my emergency stores

Yes, a lot of people have some food, fewer people have bottled water

I live in an area that had a huge storm last winter. Power, water and comms were knocked for days/weeks. The city got theirs back sooner, but ppl were relying on what they had at home for at least a couple of days
100 1
Sarah H Praia @sarahhpraia.eurosky.social · 23/10/2026
More defence spending won't help if a huge storm knocks out power, water and comms for days as it did in my area this year. Bottled water, extra food and a radio helped enormously

It's two months of demand, total, in its expected 11 year lifespan.

Sarah H Praia @sarahhpraia.eurosky.social · 21/10/2026
Two months of needs? The government is saying that it will increase domestic gas production by 6% at its peak. Domestic gas production supplies less than half of demand. The maths isn't mathing

The warming will continue until we reach net zero emissions. At which point, we will need to live with whatever climate we’ve ended up in. The sooner we reach net zero, the less extreme that climate will be, and the easier and less costly it will be to adapt to it.

Gandhi, Walesa and Mandela achieved their aims after decades of protest, there were deaths and violence in all movements, all of them were incarcerated. They didn't just march for a couple of hours every few months and get what they wanted. That doesn't happen.

No-one in the countries which have 'free' healthcare thinks it's actually free, we all know that we pay for it through our taxes. But we also know that we will never be given a huge bill, be denied care because the ins company says no, or delay care because we can't afford it

Imagine the same argument being used to suggest Black or Muslim people should be segregated on wards

Would that be an acceptable reason for her comments if the person she was concerned about was Black or Muslim? If her argument is that she was protecting the trans person from her mum's bigotry, then she is also arguing that racists shouldn't have to be on wards with people they don't like

Just 18 months ago
A screenshot of an announcement on the Society of Authors website which reads

'The SoA is organising a day of protest against Meta following revelations of pirated books being used to train their large language models.

On Thursday 3 April, we are planning a day of action to protest against Meta's alleged theft of copyright-protected works to showcase the strength of feeling amongst creators, with SoA members protesting outside Meta's London offices.

We will be hand delivering a letter to Meta detailing our strong objections to their current use of unlicensed works to train AI, demanding that authors are fairly remunerated and that their consent is sought for all future uses. We will also be sending the letter to Meta's headquarters in the US.

Actions speak louder than words.'

Freedom of movement allows that, but it also allows (allowed, for UK) people like me to immigrate permanently to the EU. I work but others retire.

My marine biologist brother-in-law had some dealings with the MSC in Australia years ago and has had a very low opinion of them since. They allowed fisheries to self-declare, as part of the certification process, that they don't accidentally catch dolphins
