I love the idea that on those tiny mushrooms, even smaller fungi might take hold, and so on, getting ever smaller...... 🍄‍🟫💛

A fungi-tastic walk today at Powerstock Common, Dorset meant I was in the same boat as @botanybeck.bsky.social with my phone full of #fungi pics! 🍄‍🟫🍄 Love the diversity of fungi, and so excited to find the fruiting bodies of Green Elfcup - just look at that colour! 😍 #wildfungihour #wildflowerhour

With the season progressing I find myself out in the gorgeous evening light more often as I squeeze the most from the shortening days. This Knapweed looked so beautiful. I love the fringed bracts of the involucre that hold those fabulous unruly purple petals in place. Just lovely.💜 #wildflowerhour

Looking lovely yesterday, was this gorgeous Teasel silhouetted against the evening sky. 😍 The top was missing on one, providing a great opportunity to inspect the internal structure of these prickly #seedheads. Turns out they are hollow in the middle & form a lovely radial pattern. #wildflowerhour

The coastal walk from Keyhaven to Normandy Marsh, Hampshire is always invigorating and there was much to enjoy there yesterday. I was particularly drawn to this flowering spike of Sea Aster, with the mirror-like Solent behind. An hour later, the tide had retreated leaving only mud! #wildflowerhour

Inspired by @sarahfaulkner.bsky.social's recent Small Copper variation collage, I thought I'd share two different subspecies seen in the past year, from populations many miles apart - phlaeoides from Madeira, and polaris from Arctic Norway. @europebutterfly.bsky.social

Can anyone help with identifying this, please? I assume it's some sort of protective cocoon, but for what #insects, I just don't know. Quite a large mass, attached to a stem of Agrimony at Lorton Meadows in Weymouth. @dorsetwildlife.bsky.social #wildwebswednesday #insectthursday

Exploring King Barrow Quarry, Portland I walked along a deep channel betweeen the rocks and saw an incredible tree doing what nature does best - finding a way to survive in tough conditions. As the walls opened up, I spotted this beautiful Ivy Broomrape nestled in a secluded corner. #wildflowerhour

Some heavenly heather for #wildflowerhour - both the hot pink Bell Heather and the more pastel toned Common Heather. I'd not realised before what prominent styles Heather has - very perky indeed, all the better for ensuring pollination I guess. 🩷 And a stunning Red Banded Sand Wasp an added bonus.

A bonus transect walk at Lorton Meadows yesterday - still lots of Clouded Yellow, incl helice. And some very smart, fresh looking Small Copper, aside from the one pictured left, centre row, who, though faded and raggedy was still full of feisty Small Copper energy. 🦋 @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social
A selection of the butterflies recorded on the Transect route at DWT Lorton Meadows, Weymouth on 3.10.2026.

Although the transect season is over there are still so many butterflies on the wing, we are continuing to record.

Still lots of Clouded Yellow around, including helice females. And some very smart, fresh looking Small Copper butterflies, aside from the one pictured left, centre row, who, though faded and raggedy was still very much full of feisty Small Copper energy.

Yesterday I recorded 32 Clouded Yellow (there were many more off route), 11 Small Copper, plus Common Blue, Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Peacock and a Painted Lady.

Congratulations on your published article. 👏 I used Google Translate to read it, very interesting. It's still feeling hot and dry here on the south coast. We had a short burst of torrential rain just as I was going out on Wed - got in my car & couldn't actually remember how to turn the wipers on! 😅

Still very warm & dry in Dorset but some #fungi emerging now, particularly russula, with the promise of more to come as autumn progresses. My favourite flower of the week was this tiny (and rather appropriately named) Small Scabious. Perched up on an exposed plateau at Tout Quarry, Portland, the stem of this diminutive specimen was just 1.5cm tall (about the width of my finger) topped with a gorgeous purple flower. 💜 #wildflowerhour

For the #wildflowerhour challenge a couple of weeks ago, I was very taken with the #seedheads of Agrimony. On Thursday they caught my eye again. Now deep red to brown - still beautiful but the dry brown ones are now ready to travel and these hooked burrs seem particularly attracted to my socks! 😂

For #wildflowerhour today, I thought I'd compile a collage of the cheeriest yellow flowers I've seen this week - floral sunshine for a grey day. Here are Autumn Hawkbit, Agrimony, Gorse, Common Toadflax, Creeping Buttercup, Ragwort, Bristly Oxtongue, Tormentil, Bird's-foot Trefoil and Fleabane. 💛

Thank you, Henk-Jan. Was fascinating to witness this interaction and great to now understand it. I must admit the romantic in me was hopeful of a fairytale ending for them. But hopefully he got the message eventually and found himself a more receptive partner.
