Even post-Kemper, Kemper Development is still basically just Kemper. "Lower demand infrastructure" actually means "infrastructure for lower-demand people" www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...
Last week I wrote about a comment made by Kemper Freeman Jr., who was comparing people who shop at Southcenter with the folks who shop at his mall, Bellevue Square.

Freeman was quoted in a newspaper story saying, “When you walk through the [Southcenter] mall, the way the customer dresses just to shop there — the light blue and pink hair curlers, the shoes that flop, flop, flop along — it’s a completely different customer.”

Bobby Ferg should really not be saying something "is not the way" without providing another path forward, especially since it sounds like things have been dire for a while www.kuow.org/governing/20...
“That said, causing significant harm and inconvenience to the people of Washington state is not the way to address those issues. I was very direct in our meeting: My expectation is that every vessel on every route is fully operational no later than the first vessel sailing tomorrow morning.”

oh dear god, the workweeks that actually result in overtime sound terrible
(b) The Employer agrees that vessels running sixteen (16) or more hours per day will
be manned by Engineer Officers working a scheduled seven (7) days on duty
followed by seven (7) days off duty and that such schedule shall conform to USCG
Regulations.
(c) Overtime shall be payable, pay period by pay period, for time worked beyond the
scheduled shift and overtime shall be payable, pay period by pay period, for time
continuously worked beyond twelve and one-half (12½) hours. If the Engineer
Officer works continuously beyond fifteen (15) hours, the Engineer Officer shall
be compensated for that additional time at two and one-half (2½) times the Engineer
Officer’s straight-time rate of pay unless a six (6) hour break has been granted.
Work performed beyond fifteen (15) continuous hours shall be paid at two and one-
half (2 ½) times the Engineer Officer’s regular rate of pay, with a two (2) hour
minimum at this rate. Engineer Officers who work more than fifteen (15) hours
shall not be eligible for work on the next scheduled shift of the current work week:
such Engineer Officers shall notify dispatch of their unavailability and will be paid
for the missed watch for twelve (12) hours at the straight-time rate of pay. These
provisions are both intended to ensure adequate crew rest.

FYI, this is happening because WSF is refusing to even give engineers a cost of living adjustment in their next contract. The salary they mention here just happens to be the highest out of six. Also, it's illegal to not give them sick leave. It's not a flex!
A Facebook post from Washington State Ferries:

This morning, 23 engine room employees called in sick. Every employee qualified to fill those positions has declined to fill them and keep the ferries running. All of the employees calling in sick, and declining to fill those vacancies, are represented by the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA) who represent engine room employees. The ferries cannot run without these roles being filled. As a result, 13 of our 18 ferries are not in service. We understand how disruptive this is to thousands of Washingtonians. We expect our employees to return to work as soon as possible.
The employees who work in the engine room play a vital role in providing WSF’s safe service, which is why Staff Chief Engineers have a base salary of $157,000, and can make more than $350,000 a year with overtime, as well as annual sick and vacation leave, and retirement accrual.
All WSF vessels are fully staffed at the beginning of every service day at U.S. Coast Guard required levels. When an employee calls in sick, request dispatchers work to fill the position as quickly as possible. When those positions aren’t filled, the boat cannot sail, which is what we’re experiencing today across 13 of the 18 vessels currently in service.

I’m not here to tell Colleen Slemmer’s family how to feel, but for the record, if I am murdered, my soul will be fine without someone else dying for it.
Slemmer's stepfather, Raul Martinez, also slammed officials for failing to carry out the execution, and said his stepdaughter's soul
"cannot rest" until her killer is dead.

oh god this is entirely too real
Eric:

Seahawk fans are now cicadas on a 12-year cycle. The cycle begins like this: The Seahawks hire a defensive minded coach with impeccable vibes. John Schneider inexplicably starts rolling sevens at the NFL draft craps table and amasses a collection of cheap talent. He also lucks into quality veterans. A decent season ensues.

Year 2: Another amazing draft. The Seahawks re-invent defense and we win a Super Bowl.

Years 3-11: John Schneider starts rolling snake eyes in the draft. All the once cheap talent starts demanding to be paid. Every drafted player will have an IQ of 7 and drive an ATV straight into a wall before the season starts. We will relive the trades for Jimmy Graham and trading two firsts for Jamal Adams. Every competent skill player will be ground to dust behind our O-Line and our once genius coach will tread water until being fired.

Time to hibernate until a new Pope is chosen. See you in 2037!

Patel defends FBl's loosening of hiring standards on bestiality, prostitution
BY ERIC TUCKER
Share
凸
The FBI quietly issued guidance this past spring lifting a categorical ban on hiring applicants who had previously engaged in prostitution. The bureau made a similar change with regard to bestiality.
Pressed about the moves at a Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearing, Patel denied that the changes reflected a lowering of employment standards. He insisted that they were designed to protect victims who had been forced to engage in that conduct from being automatically disqualified. The answer did little to satisfy Republican Sen.
John Kennedy of Louisiana, who grilled Patel about the rationale for a change that the FBI director said was proposed to him by subordinates.
"When you saw bestiality, I say this with respect:
The person who recommended it, why didn't you just say 'what planet did you parachute in from?'" Kennedy asked.

Agree with @garbageday.email that big box stores aren't quite the right analogy for big social media enshittification but I think pharmacies get a little bit closer www.garbageday.email/p/if-app-bad...
Which is really the problem with using monthly active users to measure enshittification. Social platforms get compared to physical malls or big box stores often, but that doesn’t really capture what they are. If you walk into a Walmart and it’s completely rundown, yes, you would stop going to that store and it would go out of business. As long as there are other stores left in your town you could still go to, of course. But social platforms monetize negative experiences the same as positive ones. All of these companies — and, apparently, Thelot — believe that if people keep signing up and keep using these apps they’re doing so because they actively want to and enjoy being on them. It couldn’t possibly be that you need to be on them now to run a business or communicate with other people!

The @garbageday.email analysis was much, much better. www.garbageday.email/p/the-curdli...
The left's burning desire for a muscleman of their own isn't just a masculinity problem. Yes, the curdling of the American man is clearly affecting all men, regardless of whether they're watching Joe Rogan or Hasan Piker. But the desperation to defend Platner also comes from a bizarre contradiction that has emerged on the left since Trump entered office. There is a deeply-rooted sneering, condescending inability to imagine that working people - and working class men, who always are assumed to be white in these instances
- could ever vote for anyone other than a slovenly, alcoholic townie oaf. And there is a borderline pathological insistence that policies like free healthcare, antitrust regulation, student debt relief, and a rebuke of Israel's genocide in Palestine, if shouted by a white guy in his pickup truck, could somehow, magically fix the social and racial and religious divides that have opened up into yawning chasms during the Trump era. The same leftists cheering for the DSA upset in New York last month
- which was led almost entirely by women of color
- are completely unable to imagine that anything like that could work in the small town America populated by noble savages they imagine in their heads. Platner, for all his unending messiness, was the easy way out. The choice that meant your favorite podcaster could be anti-Trump, but didn't have to sound "woke," or feminine, or whatever. And I'll admit that I was excited by Platner when I first noticed his campaign last year. I'm not from Maine, but I'm a New Englander and he reminded me of guys I grew up with. I felt the same twinge of hope that I assume many in Maine felt, seeing a man like him, with a history like his, speaking about politics the way he has. It was a hope that the guys I went to high school with or the men in my family or in my home town might suddenly wake up and realize the Republicans were screwing them over.
That there might finally be a way to save all the lost, angry, awful men I know. And I still have that hope, but Platner - and any other leftist strongman that comes along - is the shortcut. And the current implosion of his campaign is exactly what happens when you take shortcuts.

(Hi if you're reading this!) | still believe in my bones that people like that deserve to have a shot at public office and that our country would be better for it. But the Marines I'm describing were never accused of more serious things like sexual assault.
People were right to give him a chance before; and they're right to drop him now.
"But there were so many red flags," the argument goes, pointing to the sexting, tattoo, and Reddit posts. Think about that argument for a moment: it means that people should be disqualified from public office for things there isn't evidence they actually did, just "red flags" from which they can supposedly be divined. Ruling out anyone with Reddit post-level flaws bars millions of otherwise decent people from politics. The only people left are the exact kind of squeaky-clean, Mckinsey consultant politicians that was the entire point of my Platner article in the first place.
