Pretty much all of us covering the protests over the last week have gotten targeted by police in some manner: Shot at with "less-lethals", illegal searches, harassment, forced to disperse despite penal code 409.7, detainment, etc.

We're living through the Who Cares Era, where completely disposable things are shoddily produced for people to mostly ignore, while the government stomps its uncaring boot on our necks. But there's an easy way to fight back: Care. I wrote about it: dansinker.com/posts/2025-0...

A blue background with the text: The Society of Professional Journalists is alarmed by the White House's announcement that it is upending a time-tested system controlled by journalists to determine the rotating pool of reporters who cover the president.

SPJ strongly supports the White House Correspondents Association, which has long played a leading role in managing the press pool when space is limited. The WHCA condemned the administration’s announcement that it would now call the shots on the press pool as a move that “tears at the independence of a free press in the United States.”

SPJ has repeatedly called on the administration to restore access to AP, one of three permanent wire service members in the press pool.

"The Society of Professional Journalists supports the Associated Press in its First Amendment right to cover the White House and is disturbed by the Trump administration’s mounting efforts to stifle and intimidate the independent press.

“The two AP reporters banned from the White House Tuesday evening have no control over the AP Stylebook, but even if they did, it is misguided and a violation of the First Amendment to dictate who has access based on whether you like what they write or report,” said SPJ National President Emily Bloch."

Members of the Hawaii Senate introduced a bill that would subject journalists in the state to penalties for ethical violations. "This proposed legislation not only undermines press freedom but also threatens the foundation of ethical, independent journalism," said SPJ President @emilybloch.com.
A blue social media statement card that reads "Members of the Hawaii Senate last week introduced a bill that would subject journalists operating in the state to penalties for ethical violations as determined by two newly established journalism regulatory panels. The Society of Professional Journalists views this legislation as patently unconstitutional and calls for the Hawaii Legislature to remove it from consideration.

SPJ is troubled that Hawaii lawmakers propose using its Code of Ethics to abridge press freedom. “This proposed legislation not only undermines press freedom but also threatens the very foundation of ethical, independent journalism,” said SPJ National President Emily Bloch."
