Next year @elgarpublishing.bsky.social will publish my book on Economics and Science Fiction. As far as I know, it is the first book-length attempt to cover the subject systematically. But it is not the first SF-related economics text. So I thought I’d start a thread recommending some of them.

Did you know Ben Goertzel, who popularized the term AGI, told Epstein after he was convicted of soliciting a minor for prostitution: “According to my understanding, the girls you were involved with were old enough to know what they were doing, so society really has no ‘moral right’ to lock you up”

Gini index of rental property ownership among Barcelona landlords: ≈0.47. Already high, yet it understates the underlying concentration: 4.7% with 6+ properties hold 39% of rented homes, as much as the 79% of landlords who own a single flat. Data from 2022; I suspect it's worse now.

Cornell expelled students who were protesting genocide in Gaza, but made five of seven guys who gang raped a drugged girl for seven hours write essays. That tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about the morals of that institution.

I just learnt that the multimillion-dollar FTX lawsuit against Amazon is about allegedly running what were supposed to be second-price ad auctions as first-price auctions. The revenue equivalence theorem surely does not contemplate rigging the rules!

Monetary policy will be a weak remedy because firms will be left with excess capacity and debt: they will be too busy deleveraging for lower interest rates to revive investment.

The AI boom has become so important to US investment, asset prices, credit markets and world trade that a sufficiently abrupt downward revision in expected AI returns could now generate an aggregate-demand contraction large enough to cause a recession.

Increasingly convinced we economists will soon live a repetition of 2008’s “why did you not see this crisis coming?” What will we tell society? "Sorry, I was too busy refereeing papers with ChatGPT and running projects on Claude Code while the AI bubble distorted growth and debt markets"?

After a week back on LinkedIn, it is much more active and inhabited than Bluesky. The content is different too. Leaving aside the algorithmic sludge and self-promotion, I’m struck by the constant AI boosting by economists and the near-total absence of discussion of an AI bubble or possible bailouts.

Totally. In the paper we show that the difference in the use of subjectivity-related terms (emoción, personal) vanishes after controlling for film genre. So, yes, male and female directors should use different motifs

Santiago Sanchez-Pages @sanpages.eurosky.social · 15/09/2026
Not in this paper. But there is likely a cross-country component to be studied, both in the gender composition of the industry and the gendered evaluations of artistic merit.

We argue that bias in evaluation may work through withheld recognition, not so much through overt negativity: if evaluators expect excellence less often from women, they may devote less scrutiny to identifying it and award top praise less often.

Santiago Sanchez-Pages @sanpages.eurosky.social · 15/09/2026
Reviews of women-directed films are no more negative in sentiment, but films directed by men receive more brilliance- and mastery-related language and greater evaluative effort, especially from male critics.

1/2 One thought after @doctorow.pluralistic.net ’s talk yesterday in London: our feeds are full of academics (economists especially) genuinely and unreservedly enthusiastic about AI. I do not dispute that for many of us it can be a very useful technology that expands our research capabilities.

2/2 But for many others (e.g. workers, our students) the same technology means deskilling and a threat to their livelihoods. I worry that by mistaking our experience for theirs, academics may end up baffled by that public hostility and detached from the people we are meant to understand.

About the "let's leave the far-right govern so they make a fool of themselves": 1) only from privilege one can ignore the harm they will inflict upon the vulnerable and the economy as a whole & 2) you're assuming they will not exploit their power to entrench by twisting narratives and institutions.
