Wanna see something neat? I know you do! An epic 18th century tartan Jacobite suit worn by Sir John Hynde Cotton (1686–1752). There are five—count 'em—five different plaids here! Also, peep these epic trimmed buttons and buttonholes. Tassels? We got them all! From the National Museums Scotland.
A slow rotational view of a fully preserved 18th century tartan suit, belonging to Sir John Hynde Cotton. Estimated to date from about 1744. The ensemble consists of trews, or trousers, a jacket, and plaid, draped cloth worn wrapped around the body. The fine flannel wool is woven with primarily red and green threads to make five different patterns of tartan. The sleeves and front panel of the jacket are embellished with intricately woven green braid and tassels, edging the many buttons and buttonholes. A closeup of the front placket of the red and green tartan suit jacket. Finely braided green gimp trim and tassels edge nine horizontal buttonholes and two vertical pocket buttonholes. The small buttons themselves are covered in matching green velvet.

Really amazing account both of the 18th C Black scholar Francis Williams, and of Dr. Dabhoiwala’s sleuthing that led to a re-appraisal of the meaning of this portrait. (Significant page number of a book shown in the art! Dates of books shown on bookcase!) 🧪🔭 www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

Favorite item from today’s museum visit: 1746 Church of Ireland Book of Common prayer, cherished by at least four generations of the same (presumably) Irish family in India. Unfortunately, the Fort St George Museum offers little information about the book. Wish I could flip through a few pages!
1746 copy of a Church of Ireland “Book of Common prayer and Administration of the Sacraments, and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church…” printed in Dublin. Inscription reads: “Xmas: 1888. India. (The 4th Generation). “

c.1770 An old headstone of my mother's family. It exists within a row of other old family headstones in an enclosed cemetery in the middle of a field. 300 years farming in in and around the same townland. Now mapped, photographed and transcribed by Historic Graveyards Ireland. 🙏
