Found Christine Howard Sandoval at the @sanjosemuseumofart.bsky.social fascinating. Mud runs over the order human grids attempt to inpose. The earthen force undeniable
Plan, 2026
California coastal soil, clay, sand, graphite, paper, and acrylic paint on wood panel
Howard Sandoval's "diagrammatic sculptures" reference the technological and bureaucratic systems that have enabled the drainage of California's extensive wetlands.
The artworks consist of modular steel armatures that hold adobe casts and tabletop drawings.
Plot features graphite drawings of grids interrupted by gestural earthen forms, suggesting the disruptions that have resulted from the mapping, parceling, and wide-scale alteration of California's submerged landscapes. The cast forms of Drain and Pile reference the cut ditch and raised leveed landforms that farmers experimented with in the nineteenth century. Plan directly engages with engineering patent drawings that emerged from this experimentation and illustrates the geometric formations of the drainage systems that would later proliferate throughout the Bay Area and Central Valley.
