Small added context to the bearing failure (that still isn't fixed). It was cooked cooked by the time it blew the seal. I'm surprised none of the other bearings in the rear end ate it with how much metal it shed. Looked like someone dumped a tube of big glitter in there 💀

Two weeks staring at this and I've barely done anything. Tomorrow should be the day I drop the motor back in and break in the new cam. If it doesn't explode (knock on wood), I'll get to decide if I want to rebuild the transmission too, or just suck it up so I can get it driving faster.

An ancient turbo 350 transmission, viewed from the driver's side, sitting on jackstands over a trash bag laid out to protect the floor. It's filthy, caked in dirt mixed with oil (I've been told it's called schmoo in the pil industry) that is very thick.

Small block Chevy on an engine stand, looking from the front. It has a new water pump and shiny intake manifold. Two very orange but worn looking valve covers are on either side, and a chain is strung across the top so it can be lifted. Close to the back, the messy spark plug cables can be seen sticking off the top of a grey distributor cap.

The folks who make these tools are the best because they put in the time and effort to make them. Also because they're sometimes so silly you gotta take a sec to laugh yourself sore. I just about died when this loaded. This masterpiece was made by fohdeesha for crossflashing Dell raid cards.

A GRUB boot menu with the background set to a random mess of Mudbone, a Dell RAID Controller (PERC) covering the dude's "mudbone", and a still from a movie I don't recognize. Looks like two dudes in business casual dress from the late 80s or early 90s, and one is holding a baseball bat like he's gonna hit something behind Mudbone's head. The menu is pretty much unreadable on first glance due to the text blending with the background.

After about 7 months of work, I finally have something that looks like an engine. The intake and carb are just sitting there, I didn't have time to clean the insanely grimy bolts before I needed to leave. I'll probably paint the block before it goes on the car so it looks less weird.

An old Chevy v8 on an engine stand with most hardware installed. It is just missing a fuel pump, water pump, flex plate, valve covers, and the bolts that hold the intake and carb on. It is very weird looking because the intake is the cleanest part of the engine by a very, very wide margin. The car it belongs to is in the background with boxes of parts piled on the hood and the old parts piled underneath. It has a heavy patina with spots of its old green paint showing.

Ah yes, there is half an engine here now. Got the even bank its lifters, pushrods, and new roller rockers in last night. I even got to bed at a reasonable time.

The same v8 but from the front driver's side corner. You can see the pushrods and lifters in the valley with white grease on the edges. The odd cylinder bank can be seen clearly and is missing its head. The deck is a little dirty, and there is more white grease around the top of the bores.

It has an oil pan now and will have one cylinder head tonight. Maybe two if I can motivate myself to do the valves on the other tonight.

Took two months, but it has a rotating assembly that spins again. Hopefully everything else doesn't take this much time, but there's a looong way to go before it's back on the road.

A heavily patina'ed first gen small block chevy V8 upside down on a stand. It has a bolted in crank shaft attached to the timing set and camshaft. Nothing else is attached to the engine.

My spring break is off to an amazing start. My wheel bearing died on the way to my parents' house, and I somehow managed to make it the last 10 miles there safely. Now I'm out mega moolah because GM decided the entire hub assembly shouldn't be a serviceable part and instead be a consumable good. 🙃
