Virgin and Child with an Angel www.artic.edu/artworks/80530
Sandro Botticelli was one of the most renowned painters of late-15th-century Florence. Here the tender embrace of mother and child and the Virgin’s wistful expression are typical of his lyrical manner. Another version of this composition in the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, still shows the influence of the sculpture of Andrea Verrocchio and is probably an early work, made before 1470. The sinuous contours and softly modeled flesh of the Art Institute’s picture represent Botticelli’s languorous mature style.

Virgin and Child with Two Angels www.artic.edu/artworks/80526
Sandro Botticelli’s works mark the culmination of a mystical religious tradition in the art of early Renaissance Florence, from the paintings of Lorenzo Monaco and Fra Angelico through those of Fra Filippo Lippi, Botticelli’s teacher. In this lyrical late work by Botticelli, two angels draw back curtains to reveal the Virgin and Child, who are framed by slender trees in a setting suggesting a throne. The intimate presentation of the holy figures and Christ’s gesture of blessing suggest that this small painting served a private devotional function. This supposition is supported by the choice of format, since a Florentine patron would have typically commissioned a circular painting, or tondo, for use in a bedchamber.

Virgin and Child with the Young Saint John the Baptist clevelandart.org/art/1970.160
The perfectly round form, called a tondo, became popular during the 1440s. Made for domestic settings instead of churches, the circular format challenged the artist to create a harmonious, balanced composition within this more difficult shape. The attribution has been a matter of debate. Botticelli often collaborated with students, including Filippino Lippi, who would himself become a significant painter. Few specialists have doubted that Botticelli executed the central passages: the delicate modeling of the faces, the graceful poses, the figures’ profound interiority, and the diaphanous veil are the artist’s hallmarks. However, someone else in Botticelli’s studio probably painted Mary’s blue garment, also the most heavily restored part of the painting.
