Our New Lawn Mower 🖋 Me 📷 ChatGPT via duck.ai, edited with Krita, captions via ImageMagick
A boy with a grim expression is using a manual push mower to mow a lawn, while a teed-aged boy relaxes in a chair and watches his mobile phone.

Top caption: We decided our 15 year old lawn mower deserved a rest, so we got a slightly newer one online.

Bottom caption: Our son's still getting used to his new brother, but he appreciates how much easier the job is now.

Hey @Bluesky, can you allow people who aren't logged in to turn off those hella annoying animations? 99% of the time they add NO USEFUL INFORMATION to the thread and are outright stuipid.

Hey @support.bsky.team, fix your feedback. I tried to submit feedback and got "Request not yet submitted. Please check your email to verify and submit your request." I checked email and there were no messages from either Bluesky or Zendesk.

My pet rock is dying. Poor thing; so young. It’s from the Canadian Shield and is only 2.1 billion years old. ☹️

Just to let you know: if you tag a post so that only people logged into Bluesky can view it, I'll mute your account unless the post is obviously personal. I can understand people wanting to limit who can reply to a post, but I have little patience for people who want to limit access to media.

Statistically, you're 100 times more likely to be killed by a hippopotamus than a shark.
On average, hippos kill 500 people a year while sharks kill only 5.

I've just added YouTube to my list of muted words. I can't stand the over-the-top hysterical format of the cover images that infests the platform today. Now, the format works because it appeals to emotions, but in today's polarized environment we need more facts and fewer emotions.

1/3 Has anyone reading this ever given your email address to a web site simply because it popped up a box asking for it? If I'm interested in a site I'll give an email address only AFTER I've read the article I came to read, and also checked out the site. 100% of the time, no reason to give email.

1/6 I'm disappointed with ‪@skylargrayson.bsky.social‬. I criticised one of her posts as clickbait, and instead of asking for clarification she blocked me and cut off all further communication. The post was "Add it to the list of space mysteries" and a video; I saw it as clickbait because the post

Here's the Symbolics keyboard I referred to in my earlier post. Credit (URL mangled to prevent Bluesky from linking to it): httq://xahlee.info/kbd/iold51593/symbolics_keyboard_pn_365407_348de-s1300.jpg
Symbolics keyboard circa 1980s with additional keys Function, Refresh, [outlined square], [outlined triangle], [outlined circle], Clear Input, Suspend, Resume, Abort, Help, Page, Complete, Line, Symbol, Repeat, Mode Lock, Scroll, Hyper, Super, and Meta.

(1/3) In the 1980s, the Symbolics company marketed a keyboard with modifier keys Meta, Super, and Hyper in addition to the now common Shift and Control, but without an Alt key. (Today, "Windows" and "Apple" often take the role of Meta or Super.) I've come up with a layout with 8 more modifiers.
An image of a fanciful PC-style keyboard (US English layout) with 128 keys. In addition to the standard set of 102 keys, there are the following:

* Three keys in a column to the left of the keypad with the labels Home Page, Prev Tab, and Next Tab

* The standard block of edit keys:

    Insert Home Page Up
    ------ ---- ---------
    Delete End Page Down

has an additional block below it:

    Select Cut/Copy Volume Up
    ------ -------- -----------
     Undo Paste Volume Down

* There is an additional key to the left of the right-shift key with the label Compose.

* In addition to the standard modifier keys of Shift, Ctrl, Alt, and Super (the Windows key, often referred to as Meta), there is an entire row of ten fanciful modifer keys between the last alphabet row and the space bar row, with the labels Meta, Hyper, Sub, Variant, Quantum, Spin, Strange, Charm, Under, and Over.

* The bottom row includes a key to the right of the Right-Alt with the label "Fn", which is intended for features internal to the keyboard such as controlling LED illumination or programming macros.

* Beneath the numeric keypad are four multimedia keys with the labels Start (Play), Stop, Pause, and Volume Mute

On the right hand side of the picture is a column showing the number of keys in each of the 7 rows: 17, 22, 22, 19, 21, 13, 15 and their total count of 128.

I've added #photography to my list of muted words. Far too many using this tag simply post photographs with zero supporting information: where it was taken, approximately when, and if the photo is theirs or not. Social media makes it too easy to steal others' work. Give credit where credit is due.

Outright blocking someone making a comment you don't like does not make for healthy conversations. Sure, block people who post downright hateful or racist crap; they're not worth engaging with. But blocking someone who merely asked for better information? This world needs better information!

So far I've been blocked (not merely muted) by two people who posted photographs (or AI) with no context or attribution and I asked them about it. If something is yours, own it. If it's not yours, acknowledge its origins.

This is strange. I briefly followed Olga Nesterova, then removed her because she was consuming 90% of the posts in my following tab. I quite appreciate her reporting, but now she's completely disappeared from my Discovery feed. Right now I have to follow her in a separate browser window.

Do product designers even THINK? Garmin Drive 52 GPS nav unit has area on back for dash mount, 45 mm in diameter. Within is serial number: 9 chars in tiny area 5×1mm, grey ink on black BG. Data Matrix code too, 5mm square but contrast so bad phone camera can't scan it. Usable area 30x30mm. USE IT!
