The NLRB was left without a quorum for 345 days. Cases sat unanswered for nearly a year. Amazon, Starbucks, REI, and Trader Joe's won union elections and still have no contracts. The companies are simply refusing to bargain. And: union membership held steady in 2025.

In 1921, ten thousand armed coal miners marched against a private army and the United States military in the largest armed labor uprising in American history. They wore red bandanas around their necks — one likely origin of the word "redneck." Not the insult it became. A badge of solidarity.

She was 17 at Stonewall. A Latina trans woman who'd been on the streets since age 10. She co-founded STAR House for homeless trans youth — and was later booed off stage at pride by the movement she helped build. She got back up. #SaintsAndRebelsFriday

In 1943, sailors dragged Mexican American kids out of diners and burned their clothes in the street. The city didn't prosecute the attackers. They banned the zoot suit. In 2025, the administration revoked the protected status of schools, churches, and hospitals from immigration raids.

Last week: the wrongful conviction of twelve young Mexican American men. This week: what happened next. In June 1943, sailors marched into Mexican American neighborhoods with smuggled weapons. The people who had been attacked were criminalized. Sound familiar?

She started organizing farmworkers in her forties and kept going until her nineties. She signed up more UFW members than any other organizer, helped ban the short-handled hoe, and negotiated contracts, all while raising a family. The leader they thought would just make coffee. #SaintsAndRebelsFriday

In 1944, a multiracial coalition fought for two years and freed twelve wrongfully convicted Mexican American men. In 2025, that same model showed up for Kilmar Abrego Garcia — a union sheet metal apprentice wrongfully deported to El Salvador's CECOT prison despite a court order protecting him.

In 1942, the LAPD rounded up over 600 young Mexican Americans, not because of evidence, but because of their clothes and their neighborhood. Twenty-two men were put on trial together, before an all-white jury. A multiracial coalition organized immediately, raised money, and fought for two years.

Section 504 protects 1.4 million students with disabilities. It was won in 1977 when Judy Heumann and 150 disabled activists occupied a federal building for 25 days. The Office for Civil Rights that enforces it has lost nearly 50% of its staff. Seven of twelve regional offices closed.

Hitler's racial ideology was significantly shaped by US eugenics programs. Yup; ours came first. More than 30 states passed forced sterilization laws. Hitler cited American race law in Mein Kampf. The Supreme Court upheld forced sterilization in 1927. That ruling hasn't been formally overturned.

Amber Nicole Thurman was 28 years old. A mother. Applying to nursing school. She developed a complication after a medication abortion. Doctors knew what she needed. Georgia's abortion ban made performing that procedure a crime. They delayed for nearly twenty hours. Amber died.

Women voted in New Jersey from 1776 to 1807 — thirty-one years. The legislature took that right away as a partisan political maneuver. Women then spent the next 113 years fighting to get back a right they had already held. #MoreToTheStory #WomensHistory #VotingRights #Reconstruction #Progress

From the 1860s through the 1970s, the U.S. government forcibly removed Indigenous children from their families with a stated goal of "Kill the Indian, save the man." But families found ways to keep their languages alive underground, doing whatever it took to protect what was being hunted.

Indigenous sovereignty is not history. It is a living legal reality. And it is under sustained attack. Fast-tracked fossil fuel projects bypassing tribal consultation. Budget cuts to Indian Health Service. Legal challenges to the Indian Child Welfare Act going undefended by the administration.

Where did the founders get the idea for a federal system where multiple sovereign nations govern together? One answer: the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, which had been doing that for hundreds of years before European contact. Congress formally acknowledged its influence on the Constitution in 1988.

In April 2025, a two-year-old girl born in Baton Rouge — a U.S. citizen — was deported to Honduras. Her father tried to stop it. ICE gave him less than a minute on the phone. A Trump-appointed judge tried to intervene. By the time the government called back, she was already there.

The 14th Amendment, won by Black Americans at enormous cost, was first successfully used at the Supreme Court by a Chinese immigrant named Lee Yick. The 1886 ruling has since protected women, undocumented immigrants, and LGBTQ+ people. Every one of them stands on ground someone else broke.

The GI Bill is celebrated as one of the greatest pieces of legislation in US history. It created the American middle class. That is true. Here's what's missing: Southern Democrats made sure it was administered locally — which meant that in most of the country, Black veterans were simply denied.
