Hope is a wild, sci-fi action movie. Its influences are clear and many, the interesting question being whether it is an earnest homage to those predecessors or a more satirical piece (or, quite possib...

The genius of this film is how the cold war paranoia of the 1950s, a love of sci-fi films of that era such as The Day The Earth Stood Still, and the animation excellence of the late 1990s are all meld...

Being a huge fan of both the Resident Evil games and Zach Cregger’s films, I perhaps went into this, despite knowing better, with slightly too high expectations. On the whole though, Cregger has made ...

I sometimes find that British wartime films shove their Britishness down your throat, and the comedy can be distractingly predictable and tedious. Pressure is proudly a drama, omitting the unnecessary...

The sixth movie in the Insidious franchise is a soft reboot, soft mainly in the sense that Lin Shaye returns as Elise, but also because it can’t resist the same references to the first movie and its d...

The sequel is not quite as good as the first, but it’s just as much fun. Samara Weaving remains an enigmatic scream queen and the shining, albeit bloodied, light in these films. Kathryn Newton was def...

The central idea of Sorry, Baby, which it charmingly and poignantly concludes with, is that the miraculous amd strange gift that is existence comes with the unavoidable fact that bad things happen wil...

Amaze amaze amaze. Project Hail Mary has a lot of great sci-fi elements, several thrilling sequences, an abundance of Ryan Gosling charisma, but most of all a galactic quantity of heart. Like Interste...

There is no bad Peaky Blinders. Steven Knight and co have managed to consistently hit a level of quality that is barely matched in TV/film. The Immortal Man does not fall that below that level, but ne...

In much the same way as there is a lot more to Neil Diamond than Sweet Caroline, there is a lot more to Song Sung Blue than you might think from the trailer or a general expectation. Hugh Jackman and ...

With all the references to Casablanca, my favourite film, I can’t help but really like Blue Moon. Of course what really makes the film is the screenplay and how Ethan Hawke performs his large share of...

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is absolutely a horror film. Watching the pressure which Rose Byrne’s Linda is under is truly horrifying, and the brilliantly-crafted psychological and body horror makes for...

It’s probably too cliché by now to say The Bride! is a real Frankenstein’s monster of different parts stitched together, so instead I’ll say that Maggie Gyllenhaal takes some big, interesting swings, ...

Looks great, unfolds brilliantly, and Willa Fitzgerald is fantastic.

The Moment starts as a plausible portrayal of Charli XCX’s experience preparing her Brat concert tour and becomes an almost magical realist spiral of often hilarious chaos. This choice, along with the...

Kleber Mendonça Filho clearly wanted to tell a story that was quintessentially Brazilian, embracing its vibrant beauty while acknowledging its troubles. He does this with skill, producing a film which...

Rachel McAdams and Sam Raimi is a combination which delivers an absolute ton of fun. Raimi’s characteristic comedy and horror works perfectly for the story with some great jump scares and laughs throu...

The craft in this version of Wuthering Heights is excellent. However, and I must say I’ve never read the book, but from what I gather, many of the most interesting elements, pertaining to race, class,...

This is another solid entry into the ‘group of teenagers find a spooky object’ sub-genre, with a sprinkle of Final Destination’s escaping the inevitability of death dynamic, but it also has its own un...

Slashers aren’t generally my favourite sub-genre of horror, but there are plenty I love, often because they do something novel or creative. Sadly, what Primate does with a chimpanzee either. Furthermo...

There are some very good sci-fi and visual ideas in Iron Lung. (How much of this comes from the game I do not know.) The execution of the creature and blood visuals is often impressive, and there’s no...

This is a great continuation of 28 Years Later, whose ending might have taken many people aback, but now Alex Garland’s overarching vision becomes much clearer. I’ve loved Garland’s writing for many y...
