Hillsborough Corner, one of Sheffield’s more complex junctions, has all signals out today. It can be difficult for people crossing, esp if you’re blind, but in some ways the traffic has really calmed down with drivers giving way (including to people) and checking if they can risk going through.

There seem to be lots of no-priority junctions in residential Oxford. Any idea why/how?

What counts as unnecessary pavement obstruction? As I walked down here, someone else was walking up. We would have passed beside the van, but they stepped aside to wait to avoid squeezing past. Obstruction doesn’t just mean whether one person can get through.

Good to have bus fares capped again - they should be cheap. Transport sec on media saying Bee Network buses have had 11% more passengers in a year. Great! Does that mean less car driving? No. That’s also gone up. Better, cheaper buses are essential. And they don’t mean less driving. Both true.
Manchester miles driven going up steadily since 2010 (with dip for Covid). All time high in 2024 beaten again in 2025.

The Drawing Shop in Hillsborough’s old Wilko is such a joyful and wonderful place. Anyone can wander in and make art for free. While I quite liked Wilko, I can safely say I never wept with joy there while it was a shop. Go along if you can www.thedrawingshop.co.uk

Real-time heatwave records are something our media know how to report - simple numbers, hour by hour changes, fairly predictable. All the human story angles you want. Often focused around London. It’s perfect newsy stuff. Even if they manage to grossly miss that these are epically violent crimes.

After the terrible crash last week, EMR’s website has this message when you open it. It feels like another reminder of how normal and considerate responses to tragedy can look when they aren’t on roads. Have you seen a road authority share this kind of message after a serious collision?

Brick paving helps make most local streets in Netherlands feel so much friendlier and less car-dominated. I’d assumed this was more expensive than tarmac, but I gather it is more durable so actually often cheaper in the longer run.

Reform UK, welcome to The War on Cars. @thewaroncars.bsky.social
The Reform UK leader of Derbyshire County Council, Alan Graves, has already backed the idea of charging visitors and has suggested the park authority should harness modern technology to implement a form of congestion charge.
"We could put some kind of cameras up - when you enter, you pay £1", he said.

On this day 6 years ago all UK papers gave a coordinated message. A reminder of how when a crisis really feels like a crisis, it makes sense to appeal not to self-interest but to us as part of a community.

What if there were a colour-coded map of road danger? I wonder how close it might be to the inverse of the traffic delay shown on Google Maps? ✅ Where this shows green/good it indicates large amounts of traffic moving at speed. ‼️ That also usually implies high levels of danger.

Phone Shop, and look up. Sheffield city centre. So often worth enjoying what is above the most ordinary of shop fronts. It’s neither grim up north, or grim upstairs.
A white sign with the phone shop in red on it, and above this are four storeys of honey stone architecture with arched window tops, frilly details, tall gable end. Sorry I don’t know more of the right terms for the building features!

It doesn’t specify children but this (entirely conventional) statement that “everyone has to behave responsibly” feels relevant to children. I fear it encourages yet more of the usual victim-blaming of those least able to even avoid danger let alone cause it.

It’s ordinary online for people to be explicit about their fantasies of killing people with their car. This example was someone reacting to a video of a closed road for a marathon event. These things are normal. Would this be deemed worthy of police investigation?
