When I was at Dell, we were migrating companies from mainframes to Linux clusters. We had a team that was migrating the Cobol code using a Cobol compiler on Linux. They also had to convert the JCL jobs to Linux based tools. Didn't envy them that task.

They have been getting more and more desperate. Some have migrated to more modern hardware, but are still running the same code. Translating Cobol to another language, such as Java, isn't easy. Cobol when it was created in the 50s was optimized for business purposes.

I served in the Navy during Nam. My father and all his brothers served in the Navy in WWII, one got a ship named after him (killed in '42). My father and his oldest brother served on it. Father was also in Korean War. My mother was in the Army in WWII, served in China. Trump is disgusting.

The Chinese government confiscated a lot of land from the farmers to build elaborate suburbs that stand empty because most people can't afford them, and because they built the housing, but no infrastructure. No shops, no hospitals, no bus service to the city.

While I was with NASA, we would occasionally track and download data from the Lunar ALSEP package left there by the Apollo astronauts. Since we had the 30-foot S-Band dish pointed at the Moon, I am reasonably certain that is where the data was coming from.

Lived there when I was a kid in the 50s. In the Northern suburb, Bebek. Father was stationed there. He worked on the Asian side. Went to school at the International School near Rumeli Hisar, the Ottoman era fortress. Visited Aya Sofia, covered bazaar, etc. Fond memories.
