Dengue is no longer just a tropical disease. As the climate warms, the dengue-carrying mosquito is expanding its reach to new regions. Despite this growing global threat, there is still no specific treatment for dengue. Together with our partners, we're working to change this!

My wish through this speech is that others who listened will do the same — to plant those ideas in others. To help them to see that a career in public health, in all its breadth, challenge, and opportunity, is possible.

This was a speech to recognise those who planted seeds of inspiration in me 🌱 — family, colleagues, mentors, and friends. From Students for Global Health to those at the University of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian who first opened the door to a world I’d later discover was called #publichealth.

But just as compelling is how the research was conducted; in partnership with communities and strengthening local surveillance systems, integrated across animal and human health, utilising social sciences and policy analysis throughout to increase impact.

The story of exposure to Rift Valley fever #RVF, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever #CCHF and #brucellosis is remarkable; past CCHF infection was found in 26% of people across Uganda and 1 in 13 people experienced a past RVF infection.

Key tips for Registrars: Be curious about the expertise of cross-sector colleagues – that multifaceted approach is where magic happens. Be confident about the power of public health interventions as the base to support government priorities – more work is needed to translate policy into practice.
