samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I’m a little lukewarm on the music and visuals but I love Castlevania too much… It’s the harsh skies and gothic architecture. Need that Duskbloods… 000
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Thinking a lot about Dersu Uzala lately and… I don’t want to say anything extreme when talking about King Kurosawa but… it might be… high… up… there… 010

samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Turns out the big orange I was only a little interested in eating was actually a big grapefruit I was less interested in eating. 010
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Should touch it up more (way too much white) but another haniwa sorta thing. 130
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Thank you! Without a shred of modesty I don’t think I’m much of a photographer BUT was pleased with a lot of these. The focus on the statue and trees especially! And those mountains… can’t frame them to look anything less than immaculate. 110
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Some recent 35mm (Kodak Ultramax) up near Mitsumine Shrine in Chichibu. 1465
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 27/09/2026これはおもしろい！ I know little of Ukiyo-e but feel I somehow recognize it as the iconic Japanese style of art, especially as seen in the west. I like some Ohara Koson work too, who I am seeing was also a part of Shin-hanga! もいいまんがおすすめください！ I love to know lesser known works if you have any you like! 110
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 27/09/2026あありがとございます！はいとてもおもしろい The heavy lines almost remind me of manga! I wonder if there is a connection, historically; maybe the printing process? Maybe because it reminds me of manga, the silhouettes being so strong, that I’m drawn to Yoshida. Will absolutely look into Kawase! 110
Reposted by samtvandermeerthe Mountain Goats @themountaingoats.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Jackie Jackson died two days ago. His death did not get the fanfare that the big celebrities get but I assure you he was no less than any of them: a titan astride the earth. In this thread, a few of the songs he played bass on. You know these songs. You know their bass parts. youtu.be/DKVB_CtU8XQyoutu.bePressure DropYouTube video by Toots & The Maytals - Topic 211061361
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Ah amazing, I will need to look up Kawase! Yoshida’s work here almost reminds me of ink brushes with how some of the lines are thick. And his colors are so vibrant, and subjects varied. Really great stuff! 110
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I feel that… Too often I resign myself to just poring over a game’s art and music instead of playing! 010
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I only found his work a month or so ago and noticed that the exhibition had started like two days prior and took it as a sign haha Incredible stuff. I’ve liked woodblocks in the past (seems to be what he’s known for) but this stuff has such a contemporary feel in a way… Love it! 020
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I spent like nine and a half hours on trains the other day to get down to Atami in Shizuoka and see the Yoshida Hiroshi exhibit the MOA Museum has on and… worth 230

samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Finally finished Donkey Kong. Good bosses, great final boss, and the rest… Red Faction Guerrilla did this and I had more fun with it 15 years ago… 010
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 20/09/2026After a LONG time of admiring the character designs and the vague idea of what it was about… I got to see Tamago Hime at the Ghibli Museum. Beautiful, so up my alley. Some of the other shorts are maybe more interesting films, but this was always meant to be a favorite for me. Loaded on Merch. 051
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 14/09/2026For what it's worth... I went from a launch day Switch to a bought-in-October 2025 Switch 2 and find the screen perfectly... great! But also having never used an OLED Switch I couldn't tell you... 020

samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Like what are ya even doin there, Big S? It burns me that I will be buying now two games from Microsoft but it’s such a joke that they’re the ones to partner with. It’ll have the privilege of being canceled twice. 010

samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Something about the lighting really bugs me… 010
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 09/09/2026It’s particle effects and “good lighting” for the sake of “justifying” a remake… Modernize/babify if you want, but tell the story to first-timers! Not some nematode who thinks UE5 Mario looks good I *do* want to see what some of the more ghoulish enemies look like though… 010
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Reeeeally wish this Ocarina leaned into the puppety diorama sorta stuff the Dragon Quest VII remake did That one problematic for… sawing the game apart, apparently, but it *looks* good static0.polygonimages.com/wordpress/wp... 241
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 09/09/2026I knew it was coming and it still gave me a jolt. Ghost in the Shell, incredible. Cerebral and dense + fun and visceral. A series I love so much without a clear favorite entry… Give me the storyboards… Give me the new Shirow manga. SOMEONE MAKE A NEW TACHIKOMA GAME 020

samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 26/08/2026I love to cook for anyone..! It’s a little tricky to be vegetarian in Japan, so I indulge in seafood here (probably full veg when I return to the States) but yeah, it makes me appreciate “fusion cuisine” because you take a blueprint and fill in with unique ingredients for something totally new! 110
samtvandermeer @samtvandermeer.bsky.social · 26/08/2026Lord… I have a really limited kitchen space but a fun treat of being able to shop for groceries in Japan daily is mixing oddball sauces and ingredients with staples of a western upbringing… Enough to insult the Italians in my life! 100
