I was disappointed with the council vote on the Special Constables program. My referral request was defeated, there were several amendments, and the proposal ultimately passed on a vote of 10-5. (Hopkins, Franke, Ferreira Stevenson & Trosow voted No, everyone else voted Yes)
Special Constables motion passes 9-5.

Civic Engagement and Participation: The city must improve how it interacts with the public. Transparency and civic participation must be improved, and the next council must better understand why civic engagement is so low and plan to address these barriers. /6

Environmental and Planning Policies: Inadequate progress has been made meeting climate change goals and we’re facing the loss of natural and built heritage. London’s planning goals seek to increase the overall supply of new units. The next council must better target affordability & sustainability./5

Arts, Music, Culture & the Downtown: The arts & culture sector needs secure funding, enhanced coordination, better access to space, and an appreciation of local artists. This will promote tourism & core area regeneration, but the next council must better address the problem of vacant buildings. /4

Transit, Traffic & Mobility: The Mobility Master Plan needs to be carefully implemented and funded. Neighbourhood traffic safety is a major city-wide concern and improvements to London’s transit services are needed. The next council must adequately fund public transit & active transportation. /3

As the selection and duties of the Deputy Mayor is NOT one of the statutory Strong Mayor powers, council has the authority to look at other options. These include more frequent rotation, multiple DM’s with portfolios, selection by council, and direct election by voters. What do you think?
